Portable BitHide9

#1 Post by webfork »

Another stegano program, this one remarkable in that it creates a list of stored files protected by a username and password. You can search through the lists of files either by source or destination to find what you're looking for.

Despite being portable, I don't recommend adding it to the database so I'm going to put this under the discussion forum.

Status: Portable. Writes to "U.isa" file and the folder "Veni" with a "username.isa" format.

Stealth: Untested

Version tested: 1.0

Usage notes
  • Recovering a lost file - there's a way to detect/determine the hiding places if you ever lose the list. Just do a scan. there's no batch scanning though so if you're not sure where you put the hidden file, you can't find it.
  • You can't hide a text file in another text file for example. It has to be put in one of a series of other file types such as exe, dll, ico, jpg, bmp, etc. The modified file appears to function normally.
  • If you edit the file (I tested BMP) it looks like it deletes the attached hidden file.
  • No documentation with the program and very little data on the website (what's there is really hard to read)

Security concerns
  • The username and password connects to a file listing and nothing else. There's no encryption at work her eand there's nothing that sets a hidden file to a specific username/password combination. In other words, if you know a file has something hidden in it, you just need to create any account (with username: test password: test or something) and run a search for the hidden file. It will appear and you can open it.

As such, this definitely wouldn't keep out a dedicated attacker. This is a very light extra security step.
  • When you open a hidden file, it opens it inside USER/My Documents/ISA999. There's no wipe component after you're done reading the opened file.
  • This doesn't appear to use encryption so viewing a file inside a HEX editor might show the contents of a hidden text file. I didn't verify this.

Old thread update: the website and program appear to have been discontinued, and the program appears to have gone away and been replaced by something called https://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/ ... File.shtml according to Softpedia's listings

EDIT: one of our users contributed a mirror (untested): https://www.upload.ee/files/11009428/Bi ... _.rar.html
