When I was picking up the latest version, I found a few things. None of it is very important, just interesting if you're a fan of this program or video encoders.
Xmedia Recode License
I translated the license and as near as I can tell, it allows for
non-commercial, private use AND educational. So its not quite Freeware.

System Requirements
The main page suggests that DirectX 9 is required. I tested this without DirectX on a few codecs (including Windows Media WMA and WMV) and it worked fine. Still quite portable.

* Smaller error repaired XMedia Recode can convert almost all well-known audio and video formats, among them 3GP, 3GPP, 3GPP2, AAC, AC3, AMR, ASF, AVI, AVISynth, DVD, FLAC, FLV, H.261, H.263, H.264, M4A, M1V, M2V, M4V, Matroska (MKV), MMF, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, TS, TRP, MP2, MP3, MP4, MP4V, MOV, OGG, PSP, (S) VCD, Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation, VOB, WAV, WMA and WMV.
XMedia Recode can convert only unprotected DVDs.
