We have a heavy discussion here
what bit-torrent client is better
utorrent or bitcomet
I found this one the HALITE client

It comes in a zip file and seems portable.
Nice little client but under heavy development

I know that everyone's awfully fond of utorrent, and I love it myself, but there's a client called halite out there that some folks say is safer. Haven't tested it, but there's a .7z exe of it that when you decompress it looks dangerously similar to the way the portable utorrent is set up.

well lets just say utorrent has went to the DarkSide
Halite is very promising torrent client for win32 platform but some trackers have already seem to have blocked it :\ (maybe a masking feature
wink wink, it is opensource after all
). Luckily us Linux users have Ktorrent, rtorrent

Spawned by webfork's search for alternative BitTorrent clients, I decided to try out Halite.
In my really quick testing, Halite uses around half less memory than uTorrent on initial boot. Will need to test this a bit more, but I like what I see so far.
Also came across this optimizing guide on TechSupportAlert:
https://www.techsupportalert.com/conten ... -speed.htm
I might give this a read as well.

Very old topic update: profiting from
Halite's v0.4 release, I have made the present one its official forum topic, since it's the original submission (see
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1380)...
Download the latest
Halite release from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/halite/files/Halite/.
[DELETED] Another relevant topic is the debate regarding BitTorrent clients at
http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=21508. And for anyone interested, there's an excellent
Halite optimization guide at Gizmo's Freeware:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content ... -speed.htm.
BTW,
Halite x86 v0.4 fails to run on my fully updated Windows XP Pro SP3 (where v0.3 runs perfectly alright), throwing an error message that says "[...]
Halite.exe is not a valid Win32 application", so I'm guessing compatibility has been reduced to Vista+ Windows.
Moreover,
Userfriendly reports (at
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1380#comment26983) that the current version isn't really natively portable anymore, since it keeps settings in '
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Halite'.

Confirmed. Does anyone have a trick for solving this issue?

Make a PAF or yaP launcher? Here's a quick yaP one I made, seems to work:
Code: Select all
; configuration file for yaP v0.6 (http://rolandtoth.hu/yaP/)
; application name: Halite
; version: 0.40
; website: http://sourceforge.net/projects/halite/
[GENERAL]
application = App\Halite.exe
[BEFORE]
dir = %LocalAppdata%\Halite :: Settings\
Anyway, noticed an issue with Halite not being able to add .torrent files with unicode file names.

Perhaps contacting the dev would be beneficial.
Halite looks nice. The only thing I haven't found is a way to start minimized (commandline "/MINIMIZED" in utorrent).
However,
the latest yaP beta can do this using
Code: Select all
application = App\Halite.exe :: NULL :: min
Additionally "!multiple" should be set to "2" to be able to add torrent without the yaP confirmation box (GENERAL section):

Native portability is re-instated in
Halite v0.4.0.1, according to reports by
smaragdus and
joby_toss in the
database entry comments...

From changelog: "Compiled with Visual C++ 2013", so, didn't work on XP: "not a valid Win32 application". Latest working 0.3.4.

Yes, but version Halite 0.4.0.2 works just fine. You can find it here:
https://github.com/Eoinocal/Halite/releases
just scroll down and look for
Halite-0.4.0.2-x86.7z or
Halite-0.4.0.2-x64.7z
In fact Halite 0.4.0.3 starts (the process can be seen in the task manager) but doesn't show up. I am amazed that the developer didn't tested this version before publishing it.

A notice has been up on github for over 2 months now
https://github.com/Eoinocal/Halite/issues/35 with no action by the developer. Someone suggested adding a registry key but I'm not willing to include that in the setup instructions.
Posting a notice to the entry.
