A nice boost from WordPad but still some distance from Microsoft Word, Klumbu has a smooth interface and good file support. Still has some nice functionality including regular expressions, styles, columns, tables, page setup, and much more, but appears to be no longer in development (released back in 2013 and website has gone offline). Folks that don't want to pay for an office suite but don't want to learn LibreOffice should give this a try.
Status: Not portable. Writes to Program Data, AppData\Local, and Appdata\Roaming. In testing, there was an error message at launch I was able to bypass without issue.
Formats: By default saves to RTF, which is probably the most compatible but has a huge file size with any images.
File support: text, HTML, MHT (single file web archive), DOC/DOCX, ODT (LibreOffice), Word XML, ePub. There are also some export tools to PDF, spreadsheet, and image.
I tested the "portable" version 1.1.4.0, which is a little out of date vs. the available installer:
