Great rundown on the various benefits. Very good to see.

I wonder if the writer of the article is a user here?

There were two comments in particular I found quite useful. I was compiling a list of reasons why portable freeware is great awhile back that the author of the Lifehacker article hit upon many points but ...
I actually do something similar with Foobar2000 but didn't think that anyone else would see this as a benefit. Good stuff.
andSometimes with updates, certain add-ons/patches/tweaks stop working. If you have a must-have extension that works with Firefox 10, but the developers haven't gotten around to fixing compatibility for 11, but you need 11 for this other really super cool extension
... both were items I'd never written down.I sometimes keep two versions of a portable app on my computer so that I can switch interfaces without re-doing all the preferences. For example, my Foobar2000 is on my computer with the traditional interface and another one that I configured to use the Columns UI interface. I assign them both different icons in order to differentiate them in my start menu.
