fSekrit v1.4

smaragdus on 25 May 2018
  • 57KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Dec 2009
  • Suggested by dasfx

fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts saved information in self-contained executable (.EXE) files. Created files don't need fSekrit and can be access by simply double-clicking the item and entering the correct password.

Uses the widely recognized 256-bit AES encryption and unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.

Functional in 64-bit.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: None
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware/Open Source (github)
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice.
  2. Create a new file called fSekrit.portable
  3. Launch fSekrit.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: CryptoTE
What's new? - fixed: long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit
with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of
error and let user attempt to save again.
- fixed: saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and
replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done.
- added: font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the
registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your
document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting.
- added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store
it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as
the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though!
To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same
folder as the document you want to function in portable mode.
- added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks.
- fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing
"make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :)
- fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds
are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :)

You can easily get the fsekrit program from the wayback machine at:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170214195855/http://f0dder.dcmembers.com/fsekrit.index.php it says it is also valid for Win7 use.

Sherman J on 2018-05-26 12:56

I found that the version of the zip for fsekrit on the waybackmachine for 2015 is valid at 49kbytes size, the some in later snapshots are only 10kbytes and do not work.

@Sherman J
You do not need to download fSekrit from The Internet Archive, you can get it from its official website.

  • Released on 27 Dec 2011
  • Suggested by donald

Eclipse quickly encrypts/decrypt text, useful for adding security to instant messaging and email conversations. A customizable hotkey system (by default Ctrl+Shift+E) works on highlighted text to copy encrypted text to the clipboard after prompting for a password. Secure text can then be pasted into any editor or application and then decrypted via the same method.

The program is an interface for a command-line utility called MySecret, which uses the Blowfish encryption algorithm. Eclipse is written in AutoHotkey.

Password Tech is a suite of security tools, including a strong random password and data file generator, text encryption tool, and master password generator.

  • Random number generator - Create lists of random characters or passphrases from word lists. Includes multiple features to select easy-to-remember passwords that still conform to security standards.
  • Text encryption - Uses the Windows clipboard (copy and paste) to encrypt text via hotkey. Also enables caching the password temporarily so you don't have to re-enter the password repeatedly.
  • Master password - Rather than storing a specific password, the program generates the same password everytime. This is created via a master and perimeter words (e.g. service + email) to generate a high security password.

Includes available hotkeys, profiles, common password filter, and more.

For everyone still using this, be aware that version 1.0.5 still has some bugs.

User review from username al156243 in sourceforge posted this on 01/04/2015

"Locknote has a clean simple design. I would be very useful if not for a fatal bug where it occasionally fails to save changes. There is no error message or any other indication that it has failed. I have had it working perfectly for a long period of time and, for no reason, suddenly stops updating changes. If I use "save as" to create a new file, it will continue to work but will eventually fail again for no apparent reason. "

User review from username fireshadow500 in sourceforge posted this on 02/22/2013

"Be careful - LockNote silently fails to save data. You can tell by watching the Modified timestamp ... when it fails it doesn't change. I lost critical banking login details. I am using KeePass now, which isn't great for handling text but at least it is reliable."

review link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/locknote/reviews/

If you still want to use this, make backups when updating the content and always check if content is saved properly.

An alternative to this is fSekrit (smaller and works the same as lockNote) http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=784

TrueCrypt v7.1a

Midas on 26 Apr 2016

TrueCrypt creates and opens secure volumes that function like an attached drive, making it possible to move files to and from a secure place, as well as open and run. Additional security features include support for key files and hidden volumes inside regular ones (for plausible deniability) for higher security, as well as hardware acceleration and benchmark tools for speed.

Supports a range of encryption algorithms including AES, Serpent, and Twofish, as well as combinations (e.g. Serpent + Twofish) in the event that one of them is eventually cracked.

Note: This program may have unfixed security vulnerabilities.  As version 7.2 only allows the opening of TrueCrypt volumes, not their creation, we are linking to a mirrror of Version 7.1a.

FreeOTFE, named for "on-the-fly disk encryption" creates one or more encrypted virtual disks using numerous available encryption algorithms (e.g. AES, Twofish, Serpent, and many more), and can be used to encrypt entire partitions. A separate application that doesn't require administrative rights called FreeOTFE Explorer is also available from the same site, using an Explorer-like interface (see version comparison).

64-bit users: FreeOTFE Explorer is functional, but Windows 7 64-bit users cannot use FreeOTFE as the drivers are unsigned.

Note: On startup, you will receive a message asking you to use portable mode drivers to start the virtual disk drivers (you need administrator rights to do this, otherwise the menu item will be grayed out). When you shutdown the program, you will also be given the option to stop the virtual disk drivers.

Also,‭ ‬I‭’‬ve been using GPG4USB for my passwords for quite a while now,‭ ‬but sort of annoyed by the lack of a‭ ‬search‭ ‬function‭ (‬I‭’‬ve suggested that to the developers,‭ ‬but there hasn‭’‬t been a release in quite a while‭)‬.‭ May switch to this or ask the devs to support GPG.

gpg4usb is a basic, tabbed notepad tool with easy-to-use text and file encryption tools. Using the Gnu Privacy Guard (GPG) security system means you can exchange encrypted text and files with someone you've never met, where most programs require a communicated password. Additionally, users can digitally "sign" and verify information to help establish integrity, ownership, or agreement.

Users need only exchange a "public key" with one another in order to communicate. New users will need to generate a key, while users of other compatible software can import their existing keys.

Hello,

In the last week we integrated 4 new languages.

@procyon: Thanks for the hint, we've put it on our bug list and already located the appropriate line in source, which causes this bug. So this will be fixed in the next release.

@mixture: We weren't sure, if we should integrate this, because it could confuse beginners, who read in other tutorials, that the should use the maximum keysize possible. Would be great, if you write your opinion to our mailing list. In fact we're not sure, if we should reduce the maximum key size again to 8192 (which is the maximum key size of any other gpg program We know).

@webfork: We've already integrated generation of RSA keys for the next release. So this will be possible soon. And the size of the DSA key is always 1024 bit (given by gpgme I think), the size of the EL Gamal subkey can be set higher...

* gpg4usb-0.3.3-1 additionally contains a 64-bit linux binary now, so there's no need to have 32-bit compatibility libraries installed on a 64-bit linux system anymore

* we updated the included GnuPG-binaries from 1.4.16 to 1.4.18 for fixing some security issues

New alpha release 0.4

This release additionally contains binaries for MacOS. But since we had to rewrite the whole core, this release needs a lot of testing. So, if you want to be sure, better get the stable release. Blowfish Advanced CS is a easy to use encryption and disk wipe program, removing the extra step of typing in a password every time you view an encrypted file. Instead, the program caches the key and allows the dynamic viewing of encrypted files, renamed to a .BFA extension. To view, open them inside the Blowfish Advanced CS file manager or drag-and-drop them into the program window. Note that edits are not dynamically encrypted to the same location. Files must be decrypted and then edited.

The program includes a variety of security options including use of a key disk, a time-out for available decryption, multiple algorithms including Blowfish (default), AES, Twofish, Serpent, etc., multiple file / empty disk space shredding options, and more. Compression options are also available.

So I cannot even download this app :(

Anybody else experienced the same? Any mirror? I really would like to download and try it... Surely a false positive!

WhatATw@ on 2011-06-01 09:50

You are stammering Monsieur.

Chris on 2011-06-01 12:31

@spicydog: ESET has long detected one of the installers on that site (dssfv_setup.exe) as a virus. I have notified them on a number of occasions that it is a false positive (based on scans of that file from Jotti's, VirSCAN.org and VirusTotal), but with no result. It would seem as though they have now blocked the entire domain. All you can do is to lodge a job with ESET support. The website hasn't been updated in a long time, but if the webmaster was still around, if you could get them to lodge a job as well, that would help.

(I no longer use ESET myself so the problem no longer affects me)

Loaded but still private...

Mixture on 2011-12-29 16:39

Cosimo, shouldn't you admit that the actual file limit is only 64Mb in the lowest Noise/Data ratio (300%). The actual text limit is a limited 46k in the same Noise/Data ratio. That mean's a 64Mb file automatically grows 4 times bigger and there's nothing you can you about it! A 46k text file grows over 5 fatter! What good it that?

Mixture on 2012-07-28 03:41

I tested version 2.00 of this bizarre software. It doesn't look any better. It certainly hasn't performed any better. Still the same old bad limitations. I would not recommend this software.

VaultPad v1.2

webfork on 2 Nov 2016
  • 988KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Dec 2014
  • Suggested by kitsaros

VaultPad is a simple text and file encryptor. The program can take text, attachments, or both to create an easy-to-share XML file for storage or sharing.

The program uses AES cipher (symmetric-key pairs) to encrypt local messages and RSA/AES cipher (public/private key pairs) for shared messages. A SHA-512 cipher is used to hash passwords, so they aren't stored in the application itself. A MD5 algorithm is used to check embedded files for corruption. VaultPad will handle third party public keys to be able to encrypt/decrypt their files directly.

I used to be very happy with this program until I found out that decryption wouldn't work with certain combination of file + password. Now I'm usig dscrypt instead. Worked like a charm so far.

CD2100 on 2008-11-19 14:54

Ikd999, which file would it not work with? i use picocrypt which is small & works , and also i use dscrypt as well. I haven't had problems with either program. (i must admit though, dscrypt is a friendly app to use.)

Why do I have to put in my password so many times? PicoCrypt fails.

ExcelPass easily adds password protection to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF and ZIP files. The program supports drag-and-drop and can quickly encode one or more files to use standard security, meaning it can be opened by compatible viewers and editors, including Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, Adobe Acrobat, and many more. Both read and write protection are available (excluding ZIP files, which do not support write restrictions).

The program can also disable security via the same interface (click the unlock button). Functional in 64-bit.

Although there are a variety of other ways to add a password to Office and ZIP files, there is no PDF encryption component (either read or write) in the free versions of PDF-XChange, Foxit, and Adobe Acrobat. As a result, this is a very nice addition for PDF users.

spicydog on 2017-01-21 12:37

Works fine for zip and pdf files but nothing happens on xls(x) and doc(x) files :(

Am I missing something?

webfork on 2017-01-22 20:34

@spicydog: there is a known bug with creating a read-only password, which is being explored by the author. However, I just recently tested view without issue, and had no issues with DOCX or ZIP files. Files were generated with Office 2010 and 7zip. Please post in forums (or on the github page) if you keep having issues.

This program saved a few of my documents to plane text (document was saved at the end of the file.) Not sure if I am just using a password that's too long. Check it with Notepad++

fsekrit is a good program also but doesn't have tabbing

Does not seem to decrypt properly when using blowfish. I am unsure if it is the encrypt of decrypt side that is causing the issue. RC4 encryption works perfectly.

kiest on 2010-07-23 02:51

Does not encrypt/decrypt properly with all methods, but RC4 works fine. When CompressData is enabled, the decrypted file is smaller sized. When CompressData is disabled, the decrypted file seems to be the correct size but it is not the original file (checksum mismatch/content unreadable).
