mp3DirectCut is a small tool for editing MPEG audio directly. You can remove parts, change the volume, split files or copy regions to new files, all without the need to decompress your MP3 into PCM/WAV. This saves work, encoding time and disk space. In addition, there is no quality loss to edited files.

There is a new version of mp3DirectCut- 2.21, but I do not like the new icon and will stick to mp3DirectCut 2.20. I do not get it why all developers embrace the ugly and unbearable M$ flat design.

Specular on 2016-02-20 12:47

In v2.22 there's a 'Configuration Storage' setting under Prefs>Folders. By default it's unchecked. Does it need to be enabled for portable use?

The new "flat" design with similar monochrome icons is a step back in usability. Normal appearance, apart from grouping of toolbar buttons, can be restored under Configuration -> Layout.

The program is a good tool for trimming old MP3 encodes without incurring further quality loss. Glitches are avoided if the MP3 is upconverted to 320 kbit beforehand with MP3Packer.

I wish it also supported common simple video soundtrack formats.

Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch Portable v2.2-2 Rev 2

billon on 19 Feb 2018
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 16 Nov 2014
  • Suggested by Emka

Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch is a program for modifying audio, although its most noted feature is stretching. The program includes the capability for (8x, 50x etc.) sound stretching, as well "spectral smoothing" the sounds to escape the audio artifacts common in other audio editors when dramatically slowing audio. Includes many post-processing effects including filters, pitch/frequency shifters and more. The program imports WAV, OGG and MP3 files and can export to WAV or OGG.

The program can be used as an audio toy or in creating ambient or "screw"-style music.

Very nice! The controls are a bit confusing, but if you play around with it the results can be astounding.

Audacity is an outstanding audio recorder and editor. I have used it for a broad range of tasks, from modifying/improving music files to editing video audio tracks and for recording audio tracks than inserted into to video files. It has always been dependable, and is as simple or sophisticated as needed.

I like this program very much. I use it to make voice recordings for Asterisk.

zorro on 2020-03-21 07:25

The update to 1.4.0.0 applies only for the x86-version - interestingly the x64-version remains at 1.3.0.0 (last update 06.12.2016!)

freakazoid on 2020-03-21 18:15

@zorro - Looks like the Wavosaur team updated the x64 version after you mentioned it :)
