"Copy or move the contents of $INSTDIR to a folder of your choice":
I just extracted using uniextract (2. try: 7zip, same result). There is no $INSTDIR, only $PLUGINSDIR, SOUNDS and files imgburn.exe, imgburnpreview.exe, readme.txt.
I suppose this altogether is equivalent to $INSTDIR ? At least it seems to work and afterwards the ini is 18KiB and it created dir "Log Files".

I confirm that *fang-face* is right- the extraction of the latest version of ImgBurn ( with Universal Extractor version 1.6.1 or with 7-Zip version 9.20 doesn't create any '$INSTDIR' directory.

"Includes disc testing, verification (that files are exactly the same as those on the disc)"

Re verification: I'm not sure, but I think the program only verifies that the burned content is readable. I don't see the source drive active during this process.

I always verify with WinMerge after burning:

Thanks DzejPy. The interface seems clunky, but if it allows modifying bootable ISOs, it could be a winner! I've been looking for a suitable replacement for ImgBurn ever since they added OpenCandy bundleware. This might be it!

PAFuser on 2018-03-30 21:29

Windows10 Defender picks up anyburn.exe (64bit) as containing a virus, virustotal marks it clean for all other scanners. Malwarebytes scan (of folder) found no problem. Appears to be a false positive. Put in exception, have had no problems.

MoisheP on 2018-07-05 12:12

V. 4.2 scan: 65 engines report OK, but Bkav finds W64.HfsAdware.D281 and Microsoft finds PUA:Win32/InstallCore. False positives?

Burrrn_Portable < This seems like a bit of overkill, Burrrn is and always has been 100% portable and stealth (as far as I'm concerned).

The entry (Cygnus Solutions) left in the registry is created by the Cygwin POSIX Emulation Layer (cygwin1.dll) called from cdrdao.exe (CD-R Disk-At-Once) and is left empty.

I have other programs that also use this emulation layer and leave that exact registry key (empty).

So, is Burrrn stealth? Well if you consider stealth to not leaving traces of yourself, then yes.

Any files other than WAV, e.g. APE, FLAC, MP3 get decompressed to WAV in the 'temp' directory, so making the 'temp' directory relative to Burrrn's folder would cause excessive writes to your flash/portable drive (Average CD ~ 600 - 700 MB).

tandavad on 2011-12-13 07:12

Does burning a mixed mode audio CD with Burrrn require having a Disc drive that can write CD-Text. My burner is an Optiarc DVD+RW AD 7580S. According to the Nero Info Tool, it can read CD-Text, but it is not clear if it can also write CD-Text. Also, can Burrrn create an audio CD with album cover image (jpg) as well as text (track and album information).

Magibon on 2011-12-13 14:31

UPDATE: deleted the NSIS launcher i had posted that took care of the registry keys.. etc.

Here's an updated PAF launcher: | 2.51 MB

@ tandavad
for CD-Text support.. your Drive has to have the capability. I use Exact Audio Copy which does support CD-Text.. not sure about Burrrn.

Doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of operation-critical settings it COULD write, so I don't think it's a big deal.

This software is brilliant, i burned 3 costers using magicISO.
Decided to find a portable .ISO img burner and this work 1st time, i cant rate it enough THANKS.

Beeber on 2010-12-10 15:12

Forget what I posted above. This one turned out to be an InstallShield setup too.
I don't know what's up with Active@, but they are calling this zip portable, and it is not.
I hate InstallShield...

Infrarecorder is not Stealth. It creates the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygnus Solutions after a disc has been written.
