From their website: R-Undelete run in the free Home mode has no limitations for recovery from FAT partitions and also allows you to evaluate how the software recovers lost files from the NTFS file system, for which it has a limitation to recover files larger than 64KB. [filelist] can be previewed to estimate recovery chances before you upgrade the Home version for recovery from NTFS partitions

Seems that recovery from NTFS costs money and thus makes this application almost useless today.

I finally said to myself "Duuuuuuuuuuuuuh" ;)
Why am I wasting my time with downloading this app realising that this app is useless from a freeware point of view.
My above comment on 2017-08-25 20:17--that version never got
downloaded & I have ceased wasting my time.
I don't know for a fact that this app has always been so restrictive because I came in late on finding this app.
Perhaps if there's an earlier version for Vista that someone knows about, thats less restrictive, maybe you could share that with us.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

I agree Happy.Camper2's comment.
This software have a huge limitation as a freeware, and it is a wasting time to try it.

This is by FAR the ABSOLUTE BEST recovery software I've ever used. I do wish that it had a window interface... but it just recovered files that would've taken me 2 hours to recreate. Fantastic. (By the way... I tried 3 other favorites including RECUVA before using this. None of them worked. This did. I think RECUVA probably would've worked with a deep scan, but I don't have the 2 hours to sit and wait for that hope!)

You only need this program when something goes wrong and I got a chance to test it when an archived ZIP file went bad. The program worked great and did exactly what I needed. The program extracts the files from the archive that it can, then re-zipps them out to a new one (that isn't broken). Since I then extracted said archive, part of me wishes there was an option to just extract the good files and folders.

Hi guys. I am a developer of this free tool. Let me clarify the 'hard drive' recovery. The software is able to restore accidentally deleted files from built-in hard disk drives as long as two the following conditions are met:

1. The file was deleted recently and no writing was made on the volume after that

2. Follows from 1. If you delete a file from a system volume (e.g. C:\), there are little chances to restore it because the OS is constantly writing on this volume (logs, registry branches, etc).

Last time, when my external hard drive became RAW and needed to be formatted without rescuing anything inside out, I had tried many data recovery software online. After really long time scanning and trying, luckily, I eventually rescued most of my drive stuffs back with data recovery software here: http://freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/02/raw-external-hdd-ntfs.html
Moreover, most importantly, I had learned a lesson to make drive data backups all the time in case of similar data loss problems.
So, if you also don’t want to have such drive data loss issues, always prepare data backups and update them timely.

I just discovered that despite what I said earlier, you can copy a single file. This is a must-have utility for rescuing DVD's with CRC errors, among other things.

One note: Fixing those CRC errors slows this program way down, so you might want to run it overnight on bad DVD's.

Way more informative than the standard copy. For a 20 GB file copied over a slow USB 1.0 - 12 mbps connection, a simple progress bar won't do. Microslop should take note.

Honestly, when you accidentally delete something important off from your memory card or hard drive, the best solution to take them all back is to copy them back from your prepare drive or card data backups. Therefore, making data backups is really important.
But, if you also unfortunately forget to save data backups on other places, data recovery software is really workable when the previous data is not overwritten by anything new.

It doesn't produce a bit-stream copy (forensic safe). I restored a forensic safe image of a drive and then create an image with this software. I computed the hash values for the images, they don't match. I am albeit leary of this.

clement on 2010-07-25 10:07

I think to produce a forensic copy, you will need to connect the drive to a write block device. You can not use software this way to produce a forensic image.

Why do you post non-portable software on your website?

webfork on 2014-08-20 00:12

zylstra: Sometimes the developer makes changes to their program that aren't free or portable, which we of course don't have any control over. In the case of Pandora, we tried to find a mirror or host for the old version without success.

@webfork: until such mirror is found, it's in your power to downvote this...

FileExtractor v1.00

Checker on 3 Aug 2014
  • 12MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on
  • Suggested by AlephX

FileExtractor is a tool for recovering files from a binary data source such as digital cameras, partitions, hard drives, memory sticks or floppy disks. It also works on Linux partitions and image-files. It is possible to use the extractor itself (configurable to search certain types of file) or a wizard, specially in order to recover data from devices.

Note: If recovering a device, the program works by creating an independent image before attempting recovery. However, this is not the case when searching the internals of files.

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Application folder
License: GPL
How to extract:
  1. Download the EXE and extract
  2. The application is within the {app} folder
  3. Launch FileExtractor.exe or FileExtractorWizard.exe (in the case you want to use the wizard)

Some problems here !!
When I double-clicking FileExtractor.exe I get this message:

C:\Documents and Settings\oaj\My documents\FileExtractor 1.00\\FileExtractor 1.00\FileExtractor.exe\zipextimporter.py:82: DeprecationWarning: The wxPython compatibility package is no longer automatically generated or activly maintained. Please switch to the wx package as soon as possible.

Please note a version 1.04 is available.

I have not tested this but it would seem worth a try.

webfork on 2010-09-29 16:45

Information and links updated: seems to work fine. 1.04 appears to be Linux-only.

Restoration v3.2.13

Midas on 13 Jun 2018

Restoration helps undelete files that were deleted accidentally. You can scan for all files that could be recovered, or filter the results by entering a search term or extension. By contrast, if the recoverable files need to stay deleted, the program can perform a secure wipe function to fully delete recoverable files.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: None
Dependencies: Administrator rights
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch Restoration.exe.

@Oliver

On this site "stealth" generally means that when an app is run and exited correctly it leaves nothing behind beyond the record Windows makes for every app. Since this does not save any settings at all the only changes it makes will be related to any files you recover with it. Assuming these things, yes it can be considered stealth.

Restoration 3.2.13 is simply a great program!!! HUGE thanks (Domo Arigato Gozaimasu) to Brian Kato for having developed it and for the portablefreeware friends who suggested it.

I especially like the capacity to restore entire folders... Feature that I really miss in other recovery applications!

Pity that it is not possible to maximize the GUI...

spicydog on 2011-02-06 14:43

With Restoration v3.2.13 I have noticed the following:

a. - If I recover data from a local disk = Always excellent results

b. - If I recover data from a USB external hard disk = Sometimes the recovery of a shift-deleted folder is pretty weird (i.e. inside the recovered folder I find also other files, which were previously deleted on that HDD but had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the folder I just recovered)

c. - If I recover data from a (4GB) USB thumbdrive = I get immediately the "Do you want to scan vacant clusters?" popup and whether I click Yes or No after a split second I get the (exact same) "No files were found." response.

Anybody else experienced any of the above (a - b - c)?

Tnx
