SwiftSearch v7.0 Updated

billon on 18 May 2018
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 18 May 2018
  • Suggested by infimum

SwiftSearch is a lightweight program whose purpose is to help you quickly find the files you need on your Windows machine without ever requiring you to index your drives. It completely bypasses the file system (only NTFS supported) and reads the file table directly every time, which speeds up search significantly. Program also supports path-based search, regular expressions and full directory sizes.

Category:
System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: None
Dependencies: Administrator rights
Unicode support: Yes
License: CC BY-NC 2.0
How to extract: Download SwiftSearch.exe to a folder of your choice and launch.
What's new? Breaking changes:
  • Wildcard "*" is no longer multi-level; i.e., it no longer matches a backslash. Use two asterisks ("**") to denote multi-level matching (aka "globstar"). As a special case, \**\ can collapse into a single \ level. For example, C:\**\*.txt will match both C:\1.txt and C:\1\2.txt.
  • NTFS metadata (such as $MFT, ::$REPARSE_POINT etc.) are now hidden unless the Ctrl key is held when searching (alternate data streams are still shown, however).
New features & improvements:
  • Faster pattern matching.
  • Extended globbing support. Use C:\a*\**\b*.txt to match C:\ax\y\z\bw.txt. Globbing & wildcards now use the regular expression engine underneath.
  • Ctrl+C copies files like in Explorer (no support for Ctrl+X though).
  • Shift+Ctrl+C copies file paths to the clipboard (beware memory usage!).
  • Right-click also allows copying table to clipboard (beware memory usage!).
  • Lower memory usage; NTFS limits are exploited more aggressively (e.g. NTFS allows no more than 1023 hardlinks, so this is exploited). Please watch out if you push the limits on NTFS and report any problems.
  • Content-aware column resizing. See the "View" menu or try holding Shift when resizing.
  • Column sorting now has a heuristic progress bar (may not be 100% accurate) and sorting can now be cancelled.
  • Column headers now display sorting direction (ascending/descending).
  • Column headers can now be moved around.
Bug fixes:
  • MUI file support seemed to be using language ID (e.g. 1033) rather than language name (en-US).
  • Invalid regular expressions used to crash the program.
  • And others...

SearchMyFiles v2.83 Updated

billon on 4 Apr 2018

SearchMyFiles is a powerful alternative to the standard Windows search. It allows you to easily find files by wildcard, last modified/created/last accessed time, file attributes, content (text or binary search), and file size. The program is non-indexing, meaning it searches the drive directly, which is often slower but more accurate.

Can also be used to detect duplicate files via the "Search Mode" drop-down box.

I have tried and used several search apps before and was not very impressed but as soon as I saw that this product was from NirSoft I knew I had to try it. NirSoft makes so many great apps that I use a lot, its difficult to say something new about them due to the fact that just about everything they make works great and is pretty awesome overall. One thing is 4sure the native Micro$oft search engine is close to worthless, so just about anything will be an improvement.

Everything v1.4.1.895

billon on 9 Feb 2018
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 9 Feb 2018
  • Suggested by Drutt

Everything is a powerful search tool that locates files and folders by file name instantly, and includes an FTP and Web server interface. It also can search files by their contents. Unlike Windows search, Everything initially displays all files and folders on your computer. You simply type in part of the desired file name to limit what files and folders are displayed instantly. The more you type, the more specific the list becomes.

Note that the instant-search capability only works on NTFS/ReFS-formatted drives and only uses file and folder names in a file index. The program can separately catalog non-NTFS/ReFS and network servers for searching on a schedule.

  • preview_context ini setting.
Fixed:
  • A crash when clearing search history.
  • A security issue when running a FTP server.
  • An issue preventing Everything from closing when pressing ESC.
  • An issue where Everything would lose the current sort after reindexing.
  • An issue when using invalid characters to rename a file.
  • A crash when rendering tall or wide images.
  • An issue when shutting down Everything would cause it to miss changes.
  • A memory alignment issue.
  • Database corruption when renaming a folder when folder size indexing is enabled or when there is a folder exclude.
  • An issue with circular NTFS/ReFS folder parents.

No mention of the portable standard edition?

We should encourage all portable developers, this is even more important in an age of server apps which are little better than shortcuts or are worse.

Yes it is a portable payware version but a mention should be okay?

Something like "Alternatively a portable payware edition gives full standard features and can be used in business and for profit environ"

nice standalone tool for a specific purpose, good to have and not messy

freakazoid on 2018-01-20 15:14

Website is promising based on its benchmarks, but I found it harder to use than SearchMyFiles. I primarily use SearchMyFiles to find files containing a certain string in a nested directory.

I tried the Content Restrictions tab with the "Files containing string" textbox filled in, but the search was never able to finish completely and I ended up having to manually abort the search, whereas the results in SearchMyFiles was pretty much instant in a second or two.

Even if CSearcher was working correctly, I still think SearchMyFiles is more intuitive and has a more straightforward options layout. The only thing I don't like about SearchMyFiles is its dual-window layout as search results are displayed in another window.

Also, the dependency on .NET makes this less appealing for me.

Listary v5.00.2843

billon on 15 Oct 2017
  • 8MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 14 Oct 2017
  • Suggested by Jacob125

Listary is an enhancement that allows you to quickly search almost any listing in Windows by simply typing your search terms. The program will pop up a small, semi-transparent window in Explorer windows (including open/save dialogs), Task Manager, Registry Editor and even directly on your desktop. The program works with almost any application with a system-generated list.

Although some programs will automatically jump to the first letter you type (a find-as-you-type feature of Windows Explorer), you must type quickly for more than one letter and cannot see your output. Listary brings a long-time feature of Linux to Windows, letting you enter whole words and type slower with automatic changes. Additionally, it allows wildcards and has the ability to edit your input with immediate results.

Advanced features include hotkeys, autocomplete, blacklists, favorites, a customizable window. Note that the program contains many "pro"-only features, but the program is very functional in its basic version.

Bill, thanks for the feedback! I've never tested it on such a large amount of files, because I usually apply the "Pre-Filter" by size to speed up the search dramatically (e.g. > 2 MB). I'm quite sure this issue can be fixed by chopping the data to be analyzed into smaller portions. Will do some research and for sure fix it for v1.7 :)...

DocFetcher v1.1.19

billon on 11 Jan 2017
  • 51MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 10 Jan 2017
  • Suggested by vixay

DocFetcher indexes your computer, making the contents of a wide variety of files instantly searchable. Selecting a search result shows a preview of the file with text highlighted and without formatting. You can filter results by location, file type, minimum and/or maximum filesize, and more. The program can index Microsoft Office, OpenOffice/LibreOffice, PDF, RTF, EPUB, HTML, and more formats from drives, external volumes, archive files, and Outlook .PST files.

Cross-platform and functional on OS X and Linux.

Note: DocFetcher requires that you add folders/drives that you want to view before searching. See the "Basic Usage" section of the homepage for a few intro steps. When adding to the search scope, make sure to check "Store relative paths if possible"

If you see a memory error (very rare): either reduce the size/number of files indexed, or do the following (64-bit users only):

  1. In a text editor, edit misc\DocFetcher.bat so that the last line reads -Xmx4096m
  2. Move this file to the main folder
  3. Save and launch DocFetcher.bat, ignoring DocFetcher.exe from now on

    • Option for disabling the text preview. This is useful for searching the contents of very large text files;
    • New entry AllowIndexRenaming for hiding the “Rename Index” context menu entry in the Search Scope pane.
Changes:
  • The comments in the DocFetcher.bat file were printed in the command prompt.
Bugfixes:
  • Crashes:
    • During startup saying “invalid sash weights”;
    • On certain CHM files;
    • On RTF files containing images;
    • IndexOutOfBoundsException;
    • NullPointerException during indexing;
    • When trying to rename a folder beneath an index (i.e. a top-level folder). Now the renaming operation is only enabled for indexes;
    • Under certain circumstances when clicking on the buttons in the toolbar above the preview pane.
  • Fixed Outlook PST indexing issues.
  • Directory paths as long as or longer than 260 characters were incorrectly identified as NTFS junctions, causing some directories to be ignored during indexing.

UltraSearch v2.1.2

billon on 19 Jul 2016
  • 6MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 19 Jul 2016
  • Suggested by guinness

UltraSearch searches thousands of files almost instantly. File name searches narrow as they are typed, as well as with wildcards such as "*.exe". Additional information like file size and last change date are present, as well as access to Explorer's own context menu. You can exclude folders, files, or file-types by providing an "exclude" filter and results can be exported as text, RTF, HTML, CSV and Excel file, or printed.

The program works with NTFS-formatted drives to search without needing to first create an index. The program works directly with a feature of the file system called the Master File Table to give results on thousands of files in moments.
