It even can ignore one-hour time stamp differences caused by DST switch for synchronization to FAT file systems.

The program includes logging, command-line parameters and more. SyncFolders is multilingual and comes with a detailed help file.

Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
Stealth: ? No. Creates an empty folder in AppData.

What's new? New:
  • Subfolders in the target folder can also be skipped if synchronization type is Back up.
  • Improved handling of mapped network drives when running SyncFolders as administrator.
  • SyncFolders stopped the synchronization for the rule when a file did not have a last modification date. However, it should continue with the remaining files and folders.
  • The option 'View Log File' does not show the right log file if the command line option /log: is used to indicate an alternative log file location.

USBFlashCopy v1.16 Updated

billon on 26 Sep 2020
  • 302KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 25 Sep 2020
  • Suggested by guinness

USBFlashCopy backs up/synchronizes from external storage on the fly. The program runs in the background and copies all or select files from inserted media to a destination of your choice. Includes available copy throttle speed, minimum free space check to avoid filling up your drive, file filters, and can even be set to only copy from selected drives (by serial number).

New drives plugged in are prompted for a new copy profile and transfers include a progress bar. Ideal for people who do much of their work on remote computers and need to automate the process of backing up their files.

Functional in 64-bit. Note that fully transparent operations (no user notification; runs entirely in background) are only available in the registered version.

Runs on: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Unicode support: Yes
License: Free for personal use
How to extract: Download "(No installer)" usbflashcopy.exe to a folder of your choice and launch.

Zback copies Folder Properties, which most backup software does not, according to numerous tools I've tested. For that reason alone I can forgive the rather clunky UI. Love it :)

The interface is a bit of a challenge, not very intuitive. But you're rewarded by outstanding features that are hard to find elsewhere, such as:
- Existing Files only = to refresh a target
- one-click creation of batch-files for commandline
- a kind of fallback-mechanism - it can check for the existence of more than volume label + path, so you don't have to create multiple profiles for different targets that will hold the same backups

DSynchronize v2.47.1 Updated

billon on 6 Sep 2020
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 6 Sep 2020
  • Suggested by milentechie

DSynchronize lets you copy, move, or synchronize folders on your computer or over a network. The program can sync in both directions, making both folders up-to-date with the latest data, do realtime sync where any changes copied to destination and even verify it's transfers. The program can schedule operations, add timestamps to the destination folder and keep multiple backups (iterations).

If in use, the program can even eject a USB device when an operation is complete.

WARNING: DSynchronize is meant for power users! By default the program does not send deleted files to the Recycle Bin, but are instead deleted outright. Use caution in initial sync tests with sensitive data.

Dependencies: MSVBVM60.DLL
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware

Sinchu: Emphasizing that I've used Dsyncronize for years and it's definitely my go-to sync program, I acknowledge any program that deletes files should probably send them by default to the recycle bin. I've added something to the entry.

Whitelist on 2019-06-17 16:01

Webfork: I had the same problem as sinchu. The program deleted around 500gbs of data overnight. Is there any way I could get this data back? I'm not super knowledgeable in IT but I have a general understanding of how things work. Is there a specific software I could use to get the data back since I don't have any previous versions of the data to restore. Thank you.

webfork on 2019-06-19 09:40

@Whitelist: I recommend you post in forums about that. Short version: disconnect the drive that lost data until you're ready to test and look into data recovery programs such as Recuva.

Bvckup 2 v68 (beta)

webfork on 19 May 2018
  • 589KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 31 Dec 2014
  • Suggested by Midas

Bvckup 2 is a backup/synchronization tool that uses "delta" copy methods, meaning it only transfers changes to a file or files rather than recopying the entire set. This is frequently faster, saves bandwidth for network backups and can help flash media live longer by reducing the overall number of disk writes. The program can do real-time, periodic or manual backups, and also functions as a file copier that can pause and resume both local and network transfers.

Note: this program is an unsupported beta, meaning that the author provides a commercial version of the program that includes support. A previous, freeware version with fewer features is available from

Runs on: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware (unsupported beta)
How to extract:
  1. Download the setup program according to your OS and install with defaults
  2. Copy bvckup2.exe to a folder of your choice
  3. Uninstall program
  4. Create an empty text file in this folder with the following content:

    SET conf-dir="%~dp0Config"
    START "" bvckup2.exe -c %conf-dir%

  5. Rename the text file bvckup2-portable.bat
  6. Launch bvckup2-portable.bat
  7. Under Options - Preferences - Software updates, select "Don't check don't remind" as this program will always suggest downloading the latest version, which is not freeware.

Note: Over time that the contents of the "Config" can grow to substantial size. If it grows too large for your storage device, start a new profile and delete the old folder.

Yeah, sure I tested it.

Trashcan? Despite being logged in, I cannot see one.

From, I quote:
'Basically if you have a non-zero rank and you are logged in, you will find a "trash can" icon at the end of every comment.'

I infer that my rank is too lowly to even be allowed to take out the trash.

If two ranked users click that trashcan icon, it will be deleted, too. I already did. :)
