  • 4MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 25 Jun 2017

Bandizip is an archive tool that supports a customizable interface, the searching of archives by file name, file splitting, password protection, self-extracting archives, and varying levels of compression. It supports the creation and extraction of most common compression formats, as well as modern formats ZIPX and 7Z.

The program's "High Speed Archiving" function will allow you to compress or bypass the files its own algorithm on multimedia files (AVI, WMV, MP3...) or archive files (ZIP, RAR, 7Z...) that won't benefit from additional compression. This can increase archiving speed dramatically. Extract formats supported include 7Z, ZIPX, RAR, ALZ, EGG, TAR, BH, LZH, BZ2, ISO, CAB, WIM, XZ, ARJ, ZIP, Z and more.

Supports both 32 and 64-bit, as well as 29 world languages.

FileOptimizer v9.90 Updated

billon on 11 Jun 2017
  • 194MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 11 Jun 2017
  • Suggested by I am Baas

FileOptimizer is a broad format file compression tool used to reduce file size without changing the quality, known as "lossless." This is done via wide variety of optimization and recompression tools and techniques. Original files are sent to the recycle bin for restoration in the event the uncompressed version is preferred. A long list of supported formats include audio/video (MP3, OGG, M4A), image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), office formats (DOCX, XLSX, ODT, PDF), and system files (DLL, EXE).

Supports drag-and-drop of files into the window or onto the program icon. Note that by default the program removes metadata for many file types. This information reduces overall file size and protects privacy but is important to some users (e.g. photographers) and file search tools.

A 64-bit version is available within the folder, the author reports the program is functional in WINE, and can be used on the command line.

Most images and files I post to portablefreeware go through this amazing compression tool. When compressing PDF files, I strongly recommend enabling the lossy DPI compression settings (usually around 150 or 200 is fine for most documents).

@jack
First- I do not know you and I have nothing against you. I suppose you may be a very nice guy. Nothing personal here. My sister uses Facebook and I have no respect for her because of that. The same applies to my niece and to anyone who uses Facebook, I make no difference between family, friends, acquaintances. If Jesus Christ was using Facebook I would not have any respect for him either. I make no exceptions. I believe that Facebook is evil and that anyone who uses it is an accomplice in spreading of evil. I have the same attitude towards those who use Windows 10 because I believe that it is evil as well. There are two users at the forum who I know that they use Windows 10- they are nice, they have helped me a lot, I like them, I am thankful to them for their help but I do not respect them either just because by using Windows 10 they accept evil and help evil propagate. I also had Facebook but I deleted my account because if I had kept using it would have lost respect for myself. Anyway, I appreciate your work as developer of free programs. In case some day you decide to delete your Facebook account I will provide the link I once used below:

upx -d sample1.exe  (Decompressing an UPX-packed PE)

PortableApps.com AppCompactor v3.4.0

billon on 7 Feb 2017
  • 787KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 6 Feb 2017
  • Suggested by Checker

PortableApps.com AppCompactor allows you to compress whole directories including applications, file libraries, and zip files. The program is a powerful compression tool that unites 7-zip and UPX inside a user-friendly wizard. For applications, this saves disk space and increases performance when running from a slow media (like flash drives). For archives, this will recompress DLL, EXE, ZIP, JAR, IRC, PYD and BIN files to their maximum compression settings, as well as an option to decompress an app's binary files that were previously compressed with UPX.

All files are tested using UPX's test feature after compressing. Files smaller than 4K are automatically skipped as compressing will not save space on the drive. The standard Microsoft Visual C runtimes are skipped to prevent antivirus false-positives. Advanced configuration can be done with apps in PortableApps.com Format.

Note: As UPX will alter the EXEs and DLLs (reversible using the Decompress option in the AppCompactor) and some apps may have issues with Zip or Jar files compressed further, users should backup software and test it after processing.

Archive encryption in 7z has been broken since 2009, maybe even longer, its been reported time and time again but the dev stance about this has been that it's not a priority.

All that is required is a plain .txt file to break the view protection of a passworded 7z file. If you need simple single file encryption I would suggest AxCrypt for that.

billon on 2017-01-24 01:58

@Special:
What? What are you talking about? What broken, what reported, what plain .txt file? Can you elaborate?

Special on 2017-01-24 02:20

Normally you would need to know the password to access a passworded 7z archive or to even look inside one, but by using the 7z file manager you can still add stuff into a passworded archive by just dragging & dropping stuff onto it, for example a blank .txt file, that is the first part, then with the use of a simple Hex editor (HxD) you can break the password "lock" if you know what to look for. What I'm saying is, use 7-Zip for your compression needs, but for encrypting sensitive stuff you plan on uploading onto the web, look elsewhere.

What makes an application "stealth"?

For the purpose for this website, "stealth" means when an application is launched, used and terminated properly, it does not leave behind any entries in the registry or filesystem. Certain exceptions are permitted. For example, registry entries that are created/updated by Windows for the application (eg. MRU entries for dialog boxes, DirectX entries for DirectX-based apps), or temp files created in the official "Temp" folders are not taken into consideration. Note: "Stealth" does not mean non-traceability! In fact, it is quite unlikely you can hide your activities on a Windows machine from a capable system administrator.

SFXMaker 1.2.1 Final was released on January 6. The previous version was RC1.

I have updated the entry. Andrew, please bump it.

Other than that, the author has bad news. :(

Quote:

"Now comes the part i hate the most. About the future of this project. Pretty cloudy, i may say. Some points :
- This is the last version written in AutoIT (i may change my mind if someone will give me a good reason to continue with au3);
- I would really like to continue this project, but after a while coding the same thing becomes boring. I feel like i'm developing an application just for me, with no actual users out there. If someone sees this message and is considering that my SFXMaker development should continue, send me feedback (via e-mail most probably, forums are down), telling me why he does so.
- If, by any chance, this project will continue, i would like to set up a mini dev-team, to work for a brand new SFXMakert, written maybe in C/C++. Dunno."

I have good news: the author continues development of SFXMaker and just released SFXMaker 1.3.0 Beta yesterday! :)

Universal Extractor v1.6.1

webfork on 8 Jul 2016
  • 11MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 12 May 2010
  • Suggested by DigeratiPrime

Universal Extractor allows you to extract files from a wide variety of archive files, including ZIP, ARJ, LZH, as well as MSI and EXE files created using various installer packages (such as Nullsoft, Wise, Inno Setup, etc). Useful for testing apps for portability because you can extract files directly from installer packages without having to go through the installation process. Note that the original developer no longer updates the program so some manual updates may be required.

Alternatively, an unofficial version with the latest-and-greatest internals is available (on Lupo's PenSuite site).

Commercial use note: license restrictions are present on included files UHARC02.EXE and UHARC04.EXE, but can be deleted without dramatic impact on the software. See website for more information.

It's a bit OTT calling this an universal extractor, as many EXE files I try to extract with it, leads to error messages that the so-scalled universal extractor can't extract them.

Numanoid on 2014-11-01 14:32

This programme is in fact pretty much useless, there hasn't been one exe I have tried to extract over the last couple of months, where the so-called Universal Extractor has failed me :-(

UPX Tool v1.0.3 (unofficial 1.1.1)

webfork on 23 Feb 2016
  • 274KB (uncompressed)
  • Suggested by Gary

UPX is a tool that can reduce the size of system files (EXE and DLL) significantly. No additional software is required after compression and some programs will even run faster due to fewer read operations.

UPX Tool is a GUI wrapper for UPX, able to both compress and decompress.

There is an unofficial update created by Lupo PenSuite (UPX Tool+ 1.1.1) that can be download here. The main advantage of this update is functionality with UPX 3.0 (improved compression via LZMA).

Thats because virus-scanners are scamware. They nowadays recognize anything which MAY someway be related to malware (i.e. a trojan hiding itself via executable compression!) as virus. I had that happen recently to me with a business client - we had Imagine (image viewer) running for years, then at some day Avira decided to classify it as a trojan, because.... it was packed with a certain executable compressor.

Virus-scanners nowadays are designed for morons who are unable to make decisions based on information - they are made for clueless people who want to be told if something is "good" or "bad", NOT "perhaps" or "maybe".

The main reason you wouldn't use --lzma with UPX is for speed; NRV is faster. Although both tend to be so fast it doesn't matter, the size difference also usually doesn't matter.

Technomancer on 2009-02-11 07:11

I quite like its simplicity though it could do with some sort of progress meter.

Great piece of software. Tried fixing an archive in WinRAR but it failed. Tried this and it was able to rebuild the Zip file. Thanks for the post!

webfork on 2013-09-01 18:39

You only need this program when something goes wrong and I got a chance to test it when an archived ZIP file went bad. The program worked great and did exactly what I needed. The program extracts the files from the archive that it can, then re-zipps them out to a new one (that isn't broken). Since I then extracted said archive, part of me wishes there was an option to just extract the good files and folders.
