LibreOffice Portable v24.8.2 Updated

Ennovy on 27 Sep 2024
  • 776MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 27 Sep 2024
  • Suggested by JohnTHaller

LibreOffice is a complete productivity suite including word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, database, drawing tool and more. Includes strong compatibility for 100s of file formats including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio etc.). The program is similar to OpenOffice, a program that it was derived from, but has added many new features and improvements.

LibreOffice Portable is a special build developed in conjunction with the publisher. On systems without Java installed, some functions such as document creation wizards and the Base database application etc. can be enabled by adding jPortable, though this is optional and can be skipped if those functions are not needed. Alternatively, X-LibreOffice (64-bit version) is also available.

Other available portable versions:

  • Still - more tested and stable but with fewer features/capabilities
  • Legacy - for WinXP/Vista users (unsupported)

The program is cross platform with versions available for Mac, Linux/BSD (comes default with most distros) and supports a variety of extensions.

The most capable Portable Freeware Office.
Pity it takes sooo long to load in old machines ... oh, well ... that's the price.
With very capable Word processor, spreadsheet (Calc), presentations (Impress), expression builder (Math, physics, chemistry, etc.), Drawing (vector) editor and dataBase, one only misses specialized apps like diagram (like Dia) and raster image editors (The GIMP, MyPaint, LazPaint) to build an office to rival (and maybe even best) M$ Office.

Is it possible to isolate and only have the Word (or Writer) part, without the remaining programs in the suite, which I don't need?
In the past, you couldn't do this with the installed version. I'm asking just in case it has now become possible with the portable version.

freakazoid on 2024-09-30 01:25

@tomcat - It's possible to install individual LibreOffice apps on Linux distros, but not with Windows installs unfortunately.

@webfork - The software name is FreeOffice. I think it's obvious that there is a Pro version judging by the name of the program. When using FreeOffice, some upsell will be shown within the interface of the program, so if the user is interested in their enhanced features, they can do so at their own perusal.

This is possibly a greatest (portable) prog-suite. I' using only the portable version. There is a serious problem/bug I1 experienced. After want to save my presentatuons in presentations-maker its failed, and the prog said: it's not possible because it's an illegal (pirate) version of a progam.. The non-portable waersion works flawlessly!(I think, the root of the the problem, that the portable-version put the samples/sablons etc. in different way. And, misfortunately, the portabilizing-process is not work for hunspell dictionaries, but its a minor problem. Thanks!

There is also (with the same architecure) Ashampoo Free Office:
https://www.ashampoo.com/en-us/office-free
a related, a bit older (2012), but rather compact, full-fledged compatible office suite.
One might need to supply an e-mail (may be temp) to get a product key.
To make it portable one just needs to have a file called "portable.txt" in its folder.

Looks like a nice program, but the first CSV I loaded failed at linefeeds within quotes and treated those as new records, even though the developer site links to a CSV definition article that starts by saying it should be able to. Both excel and libreoffice did load the file correctly. Ah well.

@user2100
Give a try instead to Nirsoft's CSVFileView https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2156
Fair warning: This might drive you to prove unfaithful to cranky old CSVed...;-)

The Proper String's Capitialise Sentences will turn everything into lowercase. The Capitalise on Words will also turn everything into lowercase instead. Nobody has this problem?

Came across this today: "OpenOffice, after years of neglect, could shut down" at http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/09/openoffice-after-years-of-neglect-could-shut-down/

PAFuser on 2017-12-29 03:27

https://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable Version: 4.1.4 10/19/2017. Version: 4.1.5 is listed on OpenOffice site 12/28/2017 release.

DzejPy on 2024-04-01 05:48

The current version is 4.1.15 (22 December 2023). The changes are small and security related.
OpenOffice is faster than LibreOffice. The stability and immutability of the environment is great. If OpenOffice had better support for working with Office Open XML (OOXML), it would be the obvious choice for users who use common functions to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Doesn't work with PDFs... which is kind of a bummer! :(

Oustanding idea but how about a mode that scrolls text like a movie scrolls text? Why doesn't it have that? The text-replacing line roll thing is just odd.

MRU Hater on 2010-06-07 12:35

For every file you open, it creates a hidden .rtainfo file in the same folder. And I thought Picasa was bad.

I dropped Notepad++ in favor of this one. Notepad++ is rapidly turning into bloatware. Notepad2 does not need plugins for its features, and so it is faster and much more compact, while still full of useful features.

Someone mentioned AkelPad. Some of its plugins don't work too well, and the syntax highlighting of HTML files isn't nearly as good as that of Notepad2.

Midas on 2012-07-01 01:24

There's now a x64 build of Notepad2. But can someone please explain to me how to get the "Open shell links" feature, so strings like www.someurl.com or adress@server.net will launch when clicked in Notepad2?

domestique on 2013-10-25 00:27

I've tried them all over the years, including the modded version, but keep coming back to Flo's original. Small; fast; no distractions. Other notepad replacements often have too many options. The only thing I would add is a tabbed interface, but it's not a deal-breaker. Using the built-in Favourites and coupled with Flo's own metapath (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1701), it's almost perfect for the way I work.
