muCommander v1.5.1 Updated

Ennovy on 29 Sep 2024
  • 18MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 29 Sep 2024
  • Suggested by spillej

muCommander is a Java-based skinnable, tabbed file manager with a dual-pane interface. The tool connects to a many online services such as FTP, SFTP, SMB, HTTP, Amazon S3, Bonjour, HDFS (Hadoop), NFS and more. File copying includes transfer verification, rate of speed controls and transfer visualization. It can open and create a variety of archive types as well as view and modify ZIP files without recompression. The program can batch rename, change permissions/date and hash files or folders with a variety of algorithms.

Cross-platform (Mac, Linux, *BSD) and available in 27 languages.

Alternatively, an outdated X-muCommander is also available.

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: jPortable
Stealth: ? No. Saves some temporary information to %TEMP%
License: GNU GPLv3
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP or even TGZ package (since the latter lacks an EXE file which isn't relevant for portable use since it requires to have Java installed).
  2. Extract to a folder of your choice (if it's the TGZ file, the actual extraction is from its internal TAR file).
  3. Prepare the following BAT (e.g. muCommander.bat) file (which is long since it both auto detects the [version] in mucommander-[version].jar and makes sure to take the newest one if you accidentally kept previous versions):
    @echo off
    setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
    set "JAR_FILE="
    set "LAST_FILE="
    for %%f in ("%~dp0mucommander-*.jar") do (
    if "!LAST_FILE!" lss "%%~nxf" (
    set "LAST_FILE=%%~nxf"
    )
    )
    if not defined LAST_FILE (
    echo mucommander-*.jar not found.
    exit /b
    )
    set "JAR_FILE=!LAST_FILE!"
    :startApp
    start "" "%~dp0\..\CommonFiles\Java\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%~dp0!JAR_FILE!" -p "%~dp0.mucommander"
    endlocal
  4. Launch the BAT file (which relies on the Dependencies).

This program still supports SMB 1.0, which is no longer supported by Windows 10. Very useful if you have older devices and don't want to make your Windows 10 insecure by re-enabling this protocol.

After Robert Jan van der Waals, the origin developer of Data Crow, last year announced the end of his project (http://www.datacrow.net/#news), now it seems like it could continiue... https://sourceforge.net/p/datacrow/discussion/650036/

Hmmm, the first activities by the new main project developer were very promising. But by now, his last activity on sourceforge has been one year ago, as well as the last activity of the origin developer Robert Jan van der Waals. No goodby or something like this. See you tomorow and they were never seen again...

Data Crow development has been picked up again since end of year 2022 by, well, me (the original developer of Data Crow).
Great to see the updates also appear on this site, much appreciated! Expect more updates this year as I continue improving Data Crow.

DocFetcher v1.1.25

Andrew Lee on 30 May 2021
  • 82MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 25 May 2021
  • Suggested by vixay

DocFetcher indexes your computer, making the contents of a wide variety of files instantly searchable. Selecting a search result shows a preview of the file with text highlighted and without formatting. You can filter results by location, file type, minimum and/or maximum filesize and more. The program can index Microsoft Office, OpenOffice/LibreOffice, PDF, RTF, EPUB, HTML and more formats from drives, external volumes, archive files and Outlook .PST files (some .OST files also work).

The program supports complex searches via wildcards, proximity, ranges, "fuzzy" terms, and more using Lucene search. You can also do standard file name search via "filename:searchterm." The program is cross-platform and functional on OS X and Linux, as well as 64-bit Windows.

Note:

  • The program requires that you manually add folders/drives that you want to view before searching. See the "Basic Usage" section of the homepage for a few intro steps. When adding to the search scope, make sure to check "Store relative paths if possible"
  • Some issues have appeared with the program on Windows 10. Users may wish to test the PortableApps beta version if you have issues.

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: Java Runtime Environment 1.7 or higher, see forum for use with Java Portable.
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: Eclipse Public License
How to extract: Download the "portable" ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch DocFetcher.exe.

If you see a memory error (very rare): either reduce the size/number of files indexed or do the following (64-bit Java only):
  1. Delete DocFetcher.exe from the main folder
  2. From the \misc folder, copy DocFetcher-8192_64-bit-Java.exe to the root folder and rename it to DocFetcher.exe

@ smaragdus: Thanks ... and updated ;)

Tremendous search program that has saved me again and again, finding files and content that other programs miss. Each version seems to add to the pile of file formats it can index. As a result, it's on every machine I own and some I don't.

MoisheP on 2018-06-17 01:13

DocFetcher indexes many formats, such as LibreOffice documents, that Microsoft Search (aka Cortana) does not, or does incompletely. It also uses far less CPU time, once the initial indexing is completed, than MS. DocFetcher also runs on Linux. Results can be sorted by likelihood of match, as well as filename, type, date etc. Only downside is that it requires Java.

XMind 8 v3.7.9

webfork on 10 Dec 2020
  • 471MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 10 Dec 2019
  • Suggested by Gannon8

XMind 8 is a mind-mapping program with a variety of available diagramming tools for flowcharts, organizational charts, timelines and more. It can be used for brain storming, illustrating or categorizing ideas, note taking, conceptualizing and more. It supports drag-and-drop of elements, export to other formats and is compatible with most other mind-mapping programs.

Some advanced functions are restricted to the pro version but can be (mostly) removed via Edit - Preferences - XMind Pro and checking "Hide Plus/Pro features".

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: None
Unicode support: Yes
License: EPL/LGPL
How to extract: From the download page, select the Xmind 8 tab, download the ZIP package, and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch xmind.exe. When prompted, decline to install Bonjour for local network sharing.

Optionally:
  • Run Associate_XMind_File.bat to associate the program with .xmind files (this is not portable and must be run on each machine)
  • To save space, if you are sure you'll have Java installed on any machine you use, you can delete the JRE folder (thanks mc)

A small point...
The download is now 'pure' Windows.
Other OS files are not present.
Perhaps mod the initial blurb

Late to the Xmind party,...and yet:

Talk about BLOATED software indeed: 471MB ! fer chrissake (excuse my french)...:-(

One could draw half-decent "Mind Map" diagrams with EVE (182KB) just as well...;-)

Although I've been more focused on Bvckup 2 for Windows (due to the delta copy feature), DirSync Pro comes in handy on occasions and is far and away my favorite sync program on Mac.

smaragdus on 2016-05-22 06:15

@webfork
I also like and use DirSync Pro- it is packed with features and has a great preview (Analyze).
