Because of the different strategies of most defrag apps you can do more false then right:
if you're using Vista/7/8 use the build-in defragmenter on a regular basis,
if you use XP my favourite is DiskDefrag on a regular basis,
if you defragment your hard disk, please use only one app for it.

I'm not a 'fanboy' of Auslogics DiskDefrag or any of their other products.

Ultra Defrag looks good and works fast . I downloaded it just after reading a review at http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-disk-de-fragmenter.htm . Just can't wait to see how it works when compared to all other defragmenters I have tried in the past.

PS - Can anyone help me how to enable Boot Time Defragmentation provided I use the portable version.

Hi Kanu,

You wrote : "The author says the program doesn't write in other places that in his own folder."

Sorry, but I never said that : HamMultiPlayer needs to decompress files to be able to work and it does that inside "%temp%\HAM\". This directory is used to store HMP_mplayer.exe + MediaInffo.dll and 4 ini files. If you use HamCpu, HamMultiPlayerCPU.exe will be decompressed too. If you use thumbnails display, thumbnails will be created inside the same path and deleted when you stop using it...
The only exception is when you select "SaveBeside" in prefs. In this case, prefs file is saved beside HamMultiPlayer (in same directory for reasons of portability).
Portable means "no installation", not "without file writing".

If nevertheless you see others files spread everywhere, please let me know and check that your version is the one coming from my web site.

Barnuble.

kanu on 2016-12-08 07:22

Sorry if I sounded hostile but the web says 'This is a "portable" software, this means that everything is already included inside the ".exe" (no installation, no registry keys, ...)'.
Those three dots means etc.; so, portable + etc means no writing beyond its own folder because that's what portable means: I can move the folder to other drive and keep the settings.

But the problem, as you pointed, was that at first I didn't tick the "Save beside" checkbox. So, my suggestion after this would be to rename that box to a more common wording. But anyway, the blame is all mine. Sorry again.

The program is very useful, by the way.

webfork on 2016-12-10 04:46

@Kanu: Different sites have different definitions for portable but here "Stealth" is the term used when a program doesn't modify files outside of it's application folder (including the registry). HamMultiPlayer is not stealth but is portable. Please post in forums if you'd like to discuss further.

I have tried it with around 200,000 items and with about 800 items and nothing shows up. Is it because this program does not support this particular listbox/window???

Thanks for the great tool!

This is by FAR the ABSOLUTE BEST recovery software I've ever used. I do wish that it had a window interface... but it just recovered files that would've taken me 2 hours to recreate. Fantastic. (By the way... I tried 3 other favorites including RECUVA before using this. None of them worked. This did. I think RECUVA probably would've worked with a deep scan, but I don't have the 2 hours to sit and wait for that hope!)

PDF-XChange Viewer v2.5.322.10

webfork on 19 Dec 2020
  • 20MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 16 Dec 2018
  • Suggested by Myles

NOTE: This program has mostly been replaced by PDF-XChange Editor (also portable), which is actively updated and contains additional features.

---

PDF-XChange Viewer is a feature-rich program that displays multiple PDF documents within a tabbed interface. Edit features include the ability to rotate documents, add comments/annotations to any PDF file, apply custom stamps from any image/PDF file/Windows clipboard, mark-up pages with text and objects, and type directly on any PDF page in "Typewriter" mode.

The program supports exporting to BMP/JPEG/TIFF/PNG etc., or extracting text from a PDF page/file. Additional features include capturing the document with the snapshot tool (copies an area to clipboard), measuring tools for distance, area and perimeter, and more. A recommended picture-to-text OCR plugin is available (thanks Bruce) as is a PDF help file.

Reported as functional on Mac/Linux under WINE. Alternatively, PDF-XChange Viewer Portable adjusts paths, with an OCR plugin and help file available from the website as separate downloads.

For 64-bit, see forum post

@zorro:
I updated my default PDF viewer (PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.320) today. Tracker Software still updates the Viewer.
Why don't I use the PDF-XChange Editor? Simple, I need a PDF viewer, not an editor.

PAFuser on 2017-06-30 15:11

Mixture is correct. Only need as viewer with able to add text comment (download utility bills and mark date paid, less paper stored).

Under Windows 7 (and probably Vista), you may need to run this program as Administrator for it to work.
'SmartSniff' (also from Nirsoft) already has a manifest that will ask for Elevated Privileges.. not sure why this one was missed?

@Ascend4nt

Thanks. Entry updated.

pretty cool program. useful for adding domains to a hosts file or IP addresses to a PeerBlock type of app.

works on raw sockets for me on winXP SP3 so no need to install anything.

WebCookiesSniffer captures all cookies sent to and from the Web server, displaying them in a simple table. The upper pane displays the cookie string and the Web site/host name that sent/received it. When selecting a cookie in the upper pane, the program parses the information in name-value format in the lower pane.

The program is browser-independent, using a packet sniffer to gather data.

SmartSniff v2.29

lwc on 5 May 2023
  • 135KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 24 Jul 2018
  • Suggested by milentechie

SmartSniff is a network analysis/diagnostic tool that allows you to capture TCP/IP packets that pass through your network adapter. You can view the captured data as sequence of conversations between clients and servers in ASCII mode (for text-based protocols, like HTTP, SMTP, POP3 and FTP) or as hex dump (for non text-based protocols, like DNS).

On Win2K or above, SmartSniff is able to capture TCP/IP packets using raw sockets. This method has some limitations and problems, but it does not require any additional installation. A better way to capture TCP/IP packets is to install the open-source WinPcap capture driver, functional on Windows 98 and later.

Optionally, add IPToCountry.csv or GeoLiteCity.dat in the same directory as SmartSniff to show the Country of origin for each IP address.
What's new?
  • Fixed bug from version 2.28: SmartSniff crashed when selecting loopback interface or other network interfaces without connection information.

There is a more recent version of Wireshark (portable)

Kermode on 2011-08-30 23:14

@Zadadka
No I'm not - a portable program is one that doesn't install files.

@SnowStorm:
It still isn't portable since it wants to install WinPCap

bzl333 on 2013-03-13 02:53

@kermode - it works on raw sockets in winXP SP3, so it is portable for some users at least.
