Process Hacker is still being updated through so-called nightly builds: see forum topic or https://processhacker.sourceforge.io/nightly.php. |
Version note: This program has not been updated since 2016 and may contain security vulnerabilities. Please see this entry for the latest version of Opera.
Opera (Presto) is a discontinued version of the Opera web browser, meaning feature development and maintenance for this version of Opera has ceased. Compared to the newer version based on Google Chrome, it features a leaner memory footprint, more user-interface customization, an RSS reader, integrated e-mail client, IRC chat, and native BitTorrent support. A variety of extensions are available to further extend functionality.

RegDllView displays the list of all registered dll/ocx/exe files (COM registration). For each registered file, you can view the last date/time that it was registered, and the list of all registration entries (CLSID/ProgID).
The program also allows you to unregister dll/ocx files that you don't need on your system anymore. If you have dll/ocx files that don't exist on your system anymore but their registration entries still exist in the Registry, you can manually remove these entries by using 'Delete All Entries For Selected Files' option.

Another excellent tool by NirSoft. I just used this utility to search for and destroy lots of junk left in the registry by McAfee ever since I uninstalled their software a couple of years back. It had been preinstalled on my netbook, and I hadn't bothered to clean up after it. Doing that manually would have been very time consuming.

WinLister displays the list of opened windows on your system, provides data, and some optional controls. These include hide, show, close or set always-on-top mode, or save the windows list to text or HTML file. Gwennel is a lightweight word processor that takes an innovative approach to formatting options by separating them into a tree-like structure. This is useful for handling long documents with clear, organized formatting tools or for users who wish to focus on the text first and formatting second. Any style changes (such as headings, lists, or colors) are propagated throughout the entire document and, although only able to open and save OpenDocument (.odt) files, this makes the program a capable WYSIWYG editor. Additionally, users can open existing files and make rapid changes to the entire document.

BinText is a file text scanner / extractor that helps find character strings buried in binary files. The program can extract text from any kind of file and display plain ASCII text, Unicode (double byte ANSI) text, as well as Resource strings. Additional useful information for each item is included in the "Advanced" mode. Uniquely, the program will show both the file offset and the memory offset of each string found.
Although primarily targeted for programmers, it can be used by anyone interested in ferreting out character strings buried within binary files.
Note: Although updated versions of the program exist, the 3.00 version is listed for reasons described in forums.

Used this program to successfully extract keys from an older backup of the Registry hive files. Followed an online guide which recommended it since it automatically tweaks the exported key file with the correct path for importing into the registry.

MUICacheView allows you to easily view and edit the list of all MUICache items on your system. This cache is made up of registry keys that Windows automatically extracts each time you start using a new application. Windows takes the name from the version resource of the EXE file and stores it for later. You can edit the name of the application, or alternatively, you can delete unwanted MUICache items.
Note: Cache items will reappear the next time you run the application.

OpenWithView is a small utility that displays the list of all available applications in the 'Open With' dialog-box of Windows, and allows you to easily disable/enable the applications in the list.
This utility works under Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, and Windows Vista. In earlier versions of Windows, OpenWithView will display the list of 'Open With' window entries, but disable/enable feature won't work.

FastStone Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It allows you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. It has innovative features such as a floating Capture Panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, e-mailing, screen magnifier and many more.
Reported to function in Windows 7 and in Linux under WINE.
Note: FastStone Capture went payware starting from v5.4 so I have made the last freeware version available (v5.3) for direct download as the license agreement does not prohibit redistribution.

@jimdorey: I'm a little confused why we had a listing that this works with Win10 -- it really doesn't. When this version of the program stopped being developed, Win7 wasn't even out yet. Anyway, I recommend trying another software package for that OS. I've updated the entry.

@jimdorey: v5.3 works fine on my win 10 x64 using a 1080p screen resolution. Maybe you're using a high DPI screen/4k monitor, and only the last version (8.4, payware, but worth every penny) works fine in that case.
