My current preferred notepad replacement, after swapping the hideous default icon with the the vanilla one from notepad (TY, ResHack). Shame it doesn't do text case conversions, then it would be perfect -- as it is, I use a well known commercial editor for heavy duty text editing and nfoPad (totally portable from v1.56, see post @ http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5409) for nfo file viewing. For the rest, Win32Pad is lightning fast and perfectly fit for the common text checking/light editing tasks. I don't hesitate to recommend it!

@Midas, re: viewers for ANSI art (code page 437, extended ASCII)

Just thought I'd mention that some of these viewers contain translation fonts. A while back I extracted an ANSI/NFO viewer (don't recall which one... maybe getDiz), located the fonts and placed them in my system/fonts directory. This makes any editor ANSI-capable because the work is being done by an external font.

Thought I'd mention it in case your main editor supports font-toggling (toolbar button allowing a quick switch between two system fonts, example: metapad) in order to avoid switching editors just to view some of the text 'graphics'.

Midas on 2012-04-20 11:19

@Pax: great tip. Still, I'll be keeping NFOPad (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2164) 'cause it's convenient and I sometimes make adjustments to viewed files...

FAT32 Format lets you get around the 32GB limit that Windows XP imposes when trying to format a FAT32 volume (though it can read FAT32 volumes larger than 32GB just fine). It is able to format a FAT32 volume up to the maximum limit of 2TB.

It should be noted that this refers to the GUI version of fat32format (i.e., guiformat.exe); the CLI tool fat32format is up to version 1.05 -- I mistook one for the other...

EjectUSB v1.6

  • 286KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Aug 2009
  • Suggested by Queue

EjectUSB is a tool for quickly closing apps running from a USB drive and ejecting the drive from safe removal. It will automatically close all programs running from the drive EjectUSB was run from (host drive), close any explorer windows open to the host drive, remove Windows MUI and MRU entries and recent document shortcuts related to the host drive, and attempt to eject the host drive when done. It can also interface with various utilities to aid in drive ejection.

Alternatively, the program can be run from your hard drive as a tool to restore a computer to its post-boot state. If you have 10-20 windows open, this will quickly and easily close them all, akin to pressing a reset button for your desktop.

Warning: Launching EjectUSB will immediately close all programs running from the host drive and eject the drive without user intervention!

The program reads its settings from EjectUSB.ini (in the same folder as EjectUSB.exe). If EjectUSB.ini does not exist, the program will run with default settings. EjectUSB also accepts a drive letter or folder path as a command-line argument. Read EjectUSB.txt for more information.

Taskix lets you reorder buttons on the taskbar using drag-and-drop. Note that if "Group similar taskbar buttons" is set, you will be able to move a button inside the group or move the group as a whole, but not to move a button out of its group. If you open many windows so buttons end up stacked up on a single taskbar button, Taskix will also work inside the stacked button list.

Taskix seems to occasionally get windows confused for me. I've had a few windows which simply won't come to the top when I click on them - they stay behind the others. It's not necessarily taskix at fault (I have VirtuaWin running as well), but switching it off fixed the problem.

Kaleb on 2009-08-31 21:38

Uh... there are not any zip files to download.
So, how do I make it portable?

freakazoid on 2009-09-29 02:34

kaleb, the new version of Taskix uses the MSI install method.

v1.5 still exists on the Taskix server:

In the renaming through GUI department, LupasRenamer is really hard to beat for ease of use -- notwithstanding its aging interface; it would be perfect if its developer took the time to update it a bit since, as it is now, it is already showing its age...

aazard on 2020-11-09 00:29

@Midas... still true 9 years later. Bulk Filr renamer & ant renamer are good, but this matches them, who are over 2 to 3 mb, BUT weighing in at under 300kb (290kb reduced to needed files) when made portable & upx compressed

Safarp v0.5

webfork on 18 Jun 2016
  • 109KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 8 Aug 2005
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

Safarp displays the list of installed programs and allows you to repair/uninstall them. You can also remove orphaned/obsolete entries, or export the program list to a variety of report formats.

Two reasons why you should use Safarp instead of the default applet: it loads much faster (even when you have tons of installed application like I do), and it allows you to quickly located installed application by typing the first letter of its name (a major gripe I have with the default applet due to its usage of a non-standard listview control).

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Application folder
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware/Open Source
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch safarp.exe.
What's new? New
  • Support for the Quiet mode and Repair functions for the programs that were installed with Microsoft Windows Installer.
  • Added Frequency of use and Date last used columns.
  • Columns are now configurable.
  • The list can now be sorted by Program, Publisher, Size, Frequency of use and Date last used.
  • Better search field changes handling.
Removed
  • The Version column was removed as it wasn't very useful. The Program's version is still displayed in the Details panel.
Notes
  • This release was compiled with Visual C++ 6.0. As a result, the msvcp71.dll file is not required anymore. The required file is now msvcp60.dll, which is included with the OSes supported by Safarp. Moreover, the exe size is smaller.

Superb uninstaller. Very fast, very effecient.

Midas on 2012-06-22 14:14

Blinding fast. Ultra-small (exe is 48KB).

Some features not working but the export function ("Save list as..."; CTRL+S) does HTML, RTF, CSV, and TSV, doubling as a nice Windows analog to Linux Synaptic Markings -- and the templates can be edited to suit your personal taste. Cool!

It appears Mike Lin took down it's former website -- www.mlin.net is now void of any of his utilities.

After declaring all his software obsolete, he provides a link to https://web.archive.org/web/20131109164426/http://www.mlin.net/index.shtml.

Sadly, as most of his utilities were single file executables (exes), they didn't get harvested into the Web Archive; SCP is still available from:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Startup-Control-Panel.shtml
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/startup_control_panel_standalone_version.html

The entry was updated to reflect this...

"Mike Lin took down it's former website" ... That's a real bummer. Mike's programs helped out a bunch of people that I introduced to this. I definitely owe him. Great software and a huge help supporting XP and dealing with insistant autostart programs and junkware.
