What is your experience?

I guess this is a PDF *creator* and not editor... useful to create a PDF from scratch but can not edit existing ones...

Nate on 2010-03-24 18:14

It shouldn't be included in as a PDF editor.
All it is is a rich text editor that 'prints to PDF'.

robzuc on 2015-07-14 08:59

As in 2010 year comments, this is not a real editor: it just can't open any pdf file.

Lousy program. Leaves a white margin around around every image, regardless of the margin and/or paper size settings. Also, it doesn't properly set the page size, so each page looks like a thumbnail image.

Fergus on 2010-09-29 13:45

I've done this, but I still get the "Register Now" nag. Pressing clears the nag, but it's awfully irritating. Is there a way of disabling it?

Fergus on 2010-09-29 19:46

OK managed to get a register code; use it once and hey presto away you go. BUT the code is written o a local gsview.ini which also incorporates named drive letters. Move your USB stick to another host machine where it will very likely be named differently and gsview.ini is suddenly broken -- you have to supply the reg code again. Very VERY annoying; not true portable freeware, at all ...

Ascend4nt on 2012-01-24 22:37

Setup is a bit more tricky then running a self-extracting executable, and dumping Ghostscript in the same folder. Here's what I had to do:
1. Download the GSView self-extracting exe and the associated Ghostscript exe
2. Open the GSView self-extracting exe with 7-zip or other archive software and extract everything except the files indicated in 'How to Extract'. (RUNNING the exe will install a non-portable version!!)
3. Create a 'gs9.04' subfolder in the folder that GSviewPortable is in. (it seems the name is usually 'gs' followed by the version #).
4. Open the Ghostscript exe with an archive utility, go to $_OUTDIR, and extract all the files from that folder into the subfolder just created (in this case, gs9.04)
5. Now you can run GSviewPortable

*Note: I can verify what Fergus says - Registration screen pops up on run. Not a huge deal for me

Downloaded this to try exporting the pages of a PDF file to image files. It didn't work at all, just returned an unhelpful "failure" message.

RecRedDot on 2012-04-06 15:54

The "About PtoBMP" window says it will extract BMP/JPG from PDF files 'created by BtoPDF' (ONLY!!!); this should be clearly described in Synopsys to avoid frustracting loss of time attempting extraction of JPG from PDF files not created with this utility.

juvera on 2014-12-27 01:14

Disappointing, this app does not extract jpg images from pdf files.
But this one does: http://tcpdiag.dl.sourceforge.net/project/pdftojpg/pdftojpg/pdf_to_jpg_1a/PDF_to_JPG_exe.zip
It is a command line application (therefore it does not qualify according to portablefreeware) very easy to use (just pass the name of the pdf file as an argument, and all the images are extracted in a folder created and located in the folder where you launch the app). From what I have tested, the images are extracted with their original resolution.

Very interesting application when you take time to invest in it. Much more than Rainlendar although less fancy interface. Has also the import tools and is fully Unicode. Must be used by a large number of users, as it appears in 7 languages already. New search function quite usefull. Imports are possible from Excel. Extra features, such as the Money application, can be used to replace money or quicken in simple households. The music and film functions are quite handy. I'm positively surprised : it's much better than it seems at first hand.

Free PDF readers (Adobe's or otherwise) are so common and easy to obtain that I'm wondering how necessary it is to offer an alternative format, especially one that wouldn't work on Macs or Linux systems. If I knew for sure that my audience were all Windows users, I guess I might consider distributing .EXE files, but if it were up to me I'd prefer that everyone just had some kind of PDF reader.

PDFproducer is not fancy and will produce text-only PDFs in only one of three fonts, and the entire document is only one font size, but it's quick and it works very well.

Use Open Office if you want a free program to make more complex PDFs including pictures or different fonts and sizes. Open Office can export documents as PDFs.
