You can also share a folder and permanently map a drive to that share. This way your driveletter survives reboots.

The website says this is compatible only up to XP, the README file says it's compatible up to Vista. When I tried it on my Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit computer, it didn't display any of my hard drives in the main window and only two hard drives under the partition tab. It's probably not 64-bit compatible. (v3.3 Beta)

Leelu Virtual Drives Manager let you in a quick way, create a Symbolic link (aka MS-DOS Device name) to a folder and present it as drive. Drives that are created with will stay even after you restart your system and you can easily remove them by restarting Virtual Drives Manager.

FAT32 Format lets you get around the 32GB limit that Windows XP imposes when trying to format a FAT32 volume (though it can read FAT32 volumes larger than 32GB just fine). It is able to format a FAT32 volume up to the maximum limit of 2TB.

USB Flash Tools is a toolkit that provides several functions for flash memory, including SD or Compact Flash cards and USB thumb drives. The program helps verify reported capacity, backup and restore of a drive (with optional compression), and securely erase the contents. A variety of secure erase methods are available including free space or whole-drive wipe using either basic (zero out / pseudorandom) or high-security standards (like DoD).

Note: While more secure, more passes are progressively slower and can reduce the life of the flash memory drive.

Information includes partitions, firmware version, serial number, etc. while benchmarking covers transfer rate, access time, burst rate, and more. Very nice little program. Swiss army knife of HD software.

I was worried that this program writes to the registry (HKLM\HDTune), but you can avoid this by NEVER changing the default options/configurations. You can look at the options, just DO NOT click OK. There are very few options anyways and the default options are fine.

The only registry entries left will be the regular entries for recently used documents, recent files, MRU, etc. But these cannot be avoided because they are Microsoft generated.

Neither HDTune 2.53, nor HDTune Pro 3.50 ever detected the SMART parameters of my internal laptop drive (a Hitachi HTS721060G9SA00). HDDScan and CrystalDiskInfo detected them fine.

Virtual Drives Manager is a tool for defining virtual drives in your filesystem. Virtual drives are symbolic links that points to existing directories on your filesystem. This is essentially a graphical version of subst.exe.

Note: This application periodically tries to contact www.appcontrols.com. If you are using a personal firewall, you can simply block it from accessing the network. But if you are really fussy about such things, then you might not want to use the program at all.

Another way of solving the above "phoning home" issue is to edit you 'hosts' file and point www.appcontrols.com to 127.0.0.1 -- be forewarned though that, should you do this, you won't be able to open the webpage without reversing the edit...
