BitTorrent Sync is a synchronization tool for transferring files securely between two or more devices using BitTorrent technology. Unlike regular file sharing tools, individual connections must be enabled between specific users. It includes bandwidth controls and no set limit on file size, folders, devices, or other users you sync with.

Intended as a more reliable and secure alternative to cloud-based services like Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, etc. the program does not rely on any specific server or service. No data is saved on machines outside of those you specify. Negatively, there is no way to share a web-accessible link (e.g. "share via web").

Cross-platform with clients available for Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and BSD.

Note: Bittorrent Sync is no longer portable. Linking to the last available portable version (1.3.109).

Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8
Writes settings to: Writes to settings.dat in the application folder
Path portability: No
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Save BTSync.exe to a folder of your choice
  2. Inside the same folder create a new empty "Text Document" file and rename it from "New Text document.txt" to "settings.dat"
  3. Launch BTSync.exe
Setting up a sync: Choose a sync folder and then "standard setup" if you are setting it up on the initial machine or "I have a secret" if this is the second instance/device. Then copy the presented code and paste on the other machine's "I have a secret" prompt.

@MarkyMark: thanks for sharing. :)

I've been using BitTorrent sync for a while now & I've written this simple setup guide & key sharing script. It's intended to get newbies up & running and sharing files - more veteran users won't need it.

Or you could try Syncthing, see

For further reasons to abandon newer versions of BTSync, see also the post at

@ Yucca: Thanks for this info. I changed the database link back to v1.3.109 and added a note.

It has been known since Aug 27 that versions of Bittorrent Sync cannot be made portable after version 1.3.109. See the official Bittorent Sync forum thread on this at .

If you made the mistake of updating a portable version to 1.4.x, you can still download the workable 1.3.109 version again at Then follow the instructions for portablizing it here at PortableFreeware.

The 1.4.x version here on PortableFreeware should be replaced, because it cannot work portably.

Ok a version 1.3.109 works great but new one 1.4.72 even does not start. I run 7Max. However 8.1 accepted it at least after instalation but I could not check it.
I have tries with different version of Win at my other pc and laptop 1.4.72 does not work. I have no idea why. I like the program very much. So I will check later updates but stay with old version for a while.

The relationship to "torrents" is only because of the company that made this software i.e BitTorrnet. This is a product that allows syncing or backing up data between computers and/or SmartPhones.

Many advantages to this software over Dropbox or GoogleDrive etc. such as you "own" the servers and are only limited by your bandwidth and storage limits AND it is also VERY fast. Limited only by your local and remote network speeds.
