Unlocker Assistant helps unlock files locked by operating system permissions or other issues. The program automatically launches if you are trying to delete/rename/move a file that is locked. When not in use, it stays in your system tray bar. Additionally, individual locked files and folders may be drag-and-dropped onto unlocker.exe.

Alternatively, Unlocker Portable (beta) is a launcher-only version of Unlocker.

System Requirements: Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: Administrator rights
License: Freeware (see website to donate)
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice.
  2. Select a folder based on your operating system (how to determine if you are x86 or x64)
  3. Launch UnlockerAssistant.exe or drag locked files onto unlocker.exe

The alternative portable package optimized for USB is an AutoIt Wrapper created by Wraithdu which adds Unlocker to the Right-click menu by registering the UnlockerCOM.dll (shell extension), which as of this writing the 'Official' version does not. To unregister the extension and clean-up the reg entries simply Right-click the tray icon and exit.

Portable version still at 1.88

CooL 2010-03-10 09:20

Better use the one from portableapps in portable package, this version is portable but not stealth, which means there is reg junk left after use :(

Martik 2010-03-10 14:00

Version 1.8.9 is available!

melmitts 2010-03-11 18:34

I tried 1.8.9 on 3 different machines (Windows 7), Both Norton and Malwarebytes reject it as extremely dangerous. v1.8.8 does not have this problem.

Aiadi 2010-03-12 14:10

@ melmitts: yes, there is something in the new version to do with eBay handler or something that will try to connect to the net. My understanding is that this is not present in the portable version though. I used the installer version but extracted it and only used the required files together with the unlocker portable installer from PortableApps (which has the advantage of keeping the Unlocker right-click context menu entry):

Hope this helps.

legnakrad 2010-03-12 22:57

@melmitts & Aiadi:
it creates shortcuts to eBay in desktop and start menu.
to avoid it, just uncheck the eBay shortcuts during setup installation.

Aiadi 2010-03-13 10:33

@ legnakrad: This is what I said re the eBay thingy but we were talking about portable use and not the installation. The whole idea here is portability and if you don't want an installation then the best way is to use the portable installer through the link I provided.

legnakrad 2010-03-16 11:29

@Aiadi: my bad! i was answering the same question in different places and made that mistake :\
and as you said, Ā«this is not present in the portable versionĀ»

Version bump only; I use the Alternate version UnlockerPortable (Wraithdu's AutoIt script) which installs/uninstalls the driver and shell extension.

The 'Size', 'Synopsis' and 'How to extract' may need updating.

Wolfghost 2011-06-05 13:27

Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch UnlockerAssistant.exe.

Where is zip file ??

spicydog 2011-06-05 15:37

Whichever link I click (either "Download Now" or "Download Unlocker 1.9.1 - 32 bit version") brings up the "RegistryBooster" download page!

I really wonder why this very irritating redirecting MUST happen on Unlocker page!

It would be a lot nicer to have a direct download link.

Mike.S.G. 2011-06-05 17:26

How absurd, too bad the dev didn't implement a simple download concept, as simple as Unlocker is supposed to be when it comes to unlocking files.

After all the java redirects and more advertising I get 1.9.0. Added to my 'faustware' list just because the annoyance trying to get the file.

Unlocker=I'll Pass

Silver 2011-06-05 20:05

His web page makes it confusing. However it's only one click to the download page so:

32Bit Installer

64Bit Installer

Portable Version (It's only version 1.9.1)

All of those links above was just one click away. It's not the "Download Now!" since that's just an advertisement.

Mike.S.G. 2011-06-05 22:25

bup pointed out again - it's 1.9.0 that downloads. The advert is an additional window you have to close, wont kill anyone but an annoyance. Plus, why not display the tool you're there to download in Blue and not a secondary tool.

I meant 'foistware', allergy season for me.

spicydog 2011-06-07 10:16

@ Mike.S.G.

You said it right... 'foistware'! ;)

kiwichick 2011-06-12 09:53

When is the version listed here going to be changed back to the correct one?

"... and more advertising I get 1.9.0"

The website quite clearly shows the download link for the PORTABLE version (and it is only portable we're interested here, isn't it) is 1.9.0 not 1.9.1 like the standard installs.

"Portable Version (It's only version 1.9.1)"

No it's not. It's 1.9.0. So is this a typo?

It's my understanding that this method will not work for 64-bit systems and this is why the portable version is still only 1.9.0.

So, again, when is the version listed here going to be changed back to the correct one?

Midas 2012-03-16 13:42

@MikeKeyt: Long Path Tool seems to be payware. Also, it depends on .NET...

hamasaki 2013-05-04 09:36

Never been any good for me. File Governer seems a better option, but even that isn`t 100%.

spicydog 2013-05-06 08:47

Stay clear of Long Path Tool... Terrible experience with the developer (real bastards!).

If you want concrete details just PM me.

You have been warned.

webfork 2013-05-28 01:36

Tested on both WinXP and Win7x64 and very happy with this. Helped me track down a dependency that had me pulling out my hair when rearranging files.

Peter202 2013-07-19 10:12

Can i integrate portable Unlocker in windows context menu?

bankr 2013-09-25 04:22

There is 1.9.2 version. Please, update.
Unlocker 1.9.2 for 32 and 64 bit - 5/16/2013
- Improved Installer: Universal installer for both 32 and 64 bit machines
- Fixed Bug: Fixed small memory and behavior bugs
- Promotional feature: Fully optional Delta toolbar.

Checker 2013-09-25 05:57

@ bankr: The portable version is still v1.9.0 !
@ kiwichick: Right you are. I changed back the version number.

billon 2013-09-25 07:20

I just download v. 1.9.2, extract and run, seems portable (or not?)

bankr 2013-09-25 16:58

Sorry. Last portable version is definitely 1.9.0 (according to author).
I'm using 1.9.2 and posted about it mistakenly as it works for me.

olliebean 2015-08-23 18:21

Is this still available? I clicked on the portable download from the website, which redirected me to a download site, which redirected me to another download site... about half a dozen sites later with no download in sight, one of them finally tried to get me to download and install a dodgy "Download Software Manager" app. I gave up at that point.

webfork 2015-08-23 19:22

olliebean: confirmed. Switching download link to point to softpedia.
