A very competent Portable Freeware Office.
Snappy and pleasant: loads quickly and works with agility.
Has to be probabilized after acquired but one can use its word processor, spreadsheet and presentation apps together or individually. Very reasonable compatibility with M$ Office, also OpenOffice and LibreOffice.

Portable and UPX packed, its under 65mb "single language", docx, xlsx, pptx, pdf supported (see trick at bottom of post). The BEST All-in-One suite, imho. its 10% the weight of Libreoffice or Openoffice (Kingsoft Office "may" be iffy, I am unsure HOW they access docx/xlsx format licences)

WOW! the features, the speed, the UI/ribbon! I copied it all over the place (testing) no loss of function!

*Heck It might be advisable to install it, make a portable USB copy, uninstall main app and copy USB copy back to PC's drive (as its a TON smaller.. 165mb vs 64mb)

If you go single language & all help Chm's are "joined", with redundant info omitted/combined, you can get it under 62mb FULL FUNCTION!

all 3 main apps can be "split off" (with their accompanying files/folders dll's etc), result, STILL FUNCTION (thats maddness, just want the text app, boom, just presenter...boom..any..easy to do too/well named).. works out of about 22mb to 24mb for each "stand alone", easier/smaller (well easier) using "limited option installs" then using the "make portable menu button" aka only install 1 app then make portable > repeat per app

Shocking, its 1 of VERY few app "licencee's" for use of docx/xlsx. I know of...4 other legal/fully free apps that have that ability, including spread32 & atlantis (the others are gnumeric & the "office" forks: free/libre office). Plus kingsoft (and I think they ignore copyright/PRC dev's) and freeoffice (and its cripple ware)

- It makes/edit epub (pdf with some limits/tricks)
- Plus it make pdf's from txt/rich sources, can view them, no default edit (sadly, but work-around trick at bottom of post). if thats its flaw...its hardly a "flaw" seeing they have a separate free pdf editor they offer also (but a 6mb PDFEdit will always win for me until "better" features at size come along)

This feature set is dumbfounding. It competes with FOSS, other Freeware, light payware ($5) to full business suites ($500+)...but is "free forever".

*Trick*: A little conversion of "your non-self made source" pdf to an other document format (even via online), open that doc and re-export to pdf..you can now edit any pdf, no additional software needed

^ I test converted my .pdf (online) to .doc > opened in textmaker > exported back to pdf > then edited that pdf, a "T4 tax return" pdf (Canadian tax form), no issues (update rtf/docx test work 100% also)

SoftMaker provides a built-in utility for creating a portable version of FreeOffice 2018. This does the same as the "How to extract:" instructions, but is a little simpler. You still have to uninstall the installed version if you wish. Am I missing something?

Testing version 2008, not sure if it is stealth, but seems rather snappy, looks like a keeper...

For those having trouble with installation instructions:

Install it to you desktop machine,
choose default interface language (which you may change later via options),
enter registration details (received freely at email address given while registering for download; also, keep those details, as they are mandatory for SoftMaker Office 2008 installation),
choose location for install (not really important, as you'll be making that install portable),
then choose the custom button on the next dialog for selecting which components of the suite to install (I recommend getting the interface language of your choice, plus all the proofing tools for the languages you understand and minus the SMASH launcher),
then deselect the 'Install application for all users on this computer' option on the next dialog and
proceed to Install.

After that, find the SoftMaker Office entry in the start menu, and under 'tools' you'll find the option to transfer the installation to your portable device, after which you can uninstall from your desktop machine if you wish to.

Really useful soft, as it's multiplatform (Windows & Linux) and can be run portable.

The 2008 version is much lighter and faster than OOo. Wow! Looks great so far.

"ofw08charity.exe" is free but needs registration at the website for the serial. follow instructions for the extract/install up to step #3. there is no need to edit .ini files because the string "OEMRegisterSkip" is not there.

Just downloaded this and have been pulling in a variety of documents into TextMaker. I spend 30+ hours a week reviewing, marking up, and writing documents in MS Word 2003 at work and some at home in MS Word 2002. I've written macro's to make up for some of the things that MS Word doesn't do so well in those two versions.

Some of my more favorite features in TextMaker are the File Manager, the review all changes, and the built in database. Haven't seen how (or if) dot files are handled since that's where I keep most of my macro's. Was a bit disappointed that I couldn't pull in docx files but they have to keep some things back to make sales. Also, didn't notice on their website if they had a comparison table showing what the extra's are (other than the presentation clone) if you buy their 2010 version.

So far seems like a solid app.

The file that "Jon" linked to ("ofw08charity.exe") is only a 30 day demo, not a full version of Softmaker Office.

Softmaker Office 2006 is still a great program, though I am considering purchasing the latest one.

An excellent product, nice, swift, to the point. Regrettably for great suites like OpenOffice, they grow in size and unnecessary complexity. This one runs very well even in my really old PC. The only thing it lacks is a Spanish dictionary, which I don't know where to download. Otherwise, is perfect for users like me, just writing, perhaps a little spreadsheet databas here and there and not much more.

user french said the most about this app. I totally agree with his comments and highly recommend these apps for use on a stick or even vintage hardware.

Although both apps are not so bloated as M$ Office or OOo, the collection of features is really more than sufficient and covers the needs of a everyday user (and even professionals). So do not be discouraged by these comments on the fewer features! One feature was not mentioned above: one can create PDF seamlessly out of both apps.

If you are capable of German - there as a forum on the manufacturer's website encompassing lots of tips and tricks. Help to even weird questions is available there.

This is a very nice product. It has fewer features than OpenOffice.org, but the features are carefully selected and should cover the needs of most people.

For those with questions about features or how they're implemented, there's a pdf version of the complete manuals to be found in the program folder that should answer any questions. The manuals are well written and well indexed.

MS Office Office file compatibility (pre-2007) is very good, but PlanMaker (the spreadsheet) can't handle massive spreadsheets. The row and column limits are similar to early versions of Excel.

This is good enough software that I bought the newer version, which can also be run from a portable drive.

One note: after the initial install, you need only go to the Start menu, find the SoftMaker Office 2006 entry, choose the Utilities submenu, then choose Install SoftMaker Office on a USB stick. While wandering around you may also see the Documentation submenu for easy access to the pdf documentation.

I use this as my everyday spreadsheet and word processor - much faster than OpenOffice, especially when run from a USB stick, but less full featured - also OpenOffice has a presentation (powerpoint-esq)feature which SoftMaker lacks in its free (2006) version.

Google Apps (see TheVinster comment) is a non starter when you work remotely with sporadic internet access.

I keep OpenOffice for occasional use, but rarely have to use it - especially for spreadsheets.

I don't understand, why not just use Google Apps??

I would like more information about "built-in database and mailmerge function". They don't explain anything in the website.

This is less bloated than MS Office and OpenOffice.Org, which continue to get more bulkier and slower. It's an older version thus it has its quirks and doesn't it have a powerpoint counterpart, but if you need a reasonably featured word/spreadsheet suite it may be worth the download.
