Folderico allows you to change the default icon of any folder. It performs this feat by creating a desktop.ini file in the chosen folder that points to the desired icon (also automatically created) so that Windows Explorer will render the folder icon differently. Folderico does not need to be running for the new folder icon to be displayed, and the changes are sticky even when the hard disk or memory stick is plugged into another machine.

(According to http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14553) Seems Folderico v4.0.0.12 RC12 is portable: http://eng.softq.org/folderico/portable ...

Another portable alternative is Cylog FolderIcons (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=203).

Badges (same company) didn't worked the way I wanted. Some problems with rendering...so maybe this will be better. I need custom icons for folders only anyway..plus this is portable

Does it use relative paths?

It seems, by default the folderico.ini file is not created, so you should do it by yourself (simply create an empty folderico.ini file).

Your toolbar and other settings will be reserved this way.

This excellent app is just what I needed. It makes a very useful productivity tool (humans are such visually-oriented creatures).

Highly recommended.
