I've tagged my whole collection of mp3 with mp3tag without even knowing it was portable.
Easy to use and powerful !
I like this software !

Lare2 2007-01-19 16:10

The same happened to me. Been using this app for long time and didn't knew it was portable. Now it's even better

a 2007-01-19 19:17

i copied this from my program/ directory to my family computer a few months ago, i didn't know it was portable either, i just assumed. hehe, anyways nice to know, because it's cool!

alex dante 2007-01-20 00:56

Don't be too surprised, guys, it looks like portability was added with this version :)

Punjabo 2007-01-22 11:54

Great program, but not TRULY portable. Even after following the suggested 'installation' method, numerous registry values are written under the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Florian Heidenreich when you run the program for the first time. The values appear to deal with window metrics (size, position, etc.). Even if you delete the key, it re-appears next time you run the program. Not a big deal...but not true STEALTH mode either.

Andrew Lee 2007-04-11 07:00

Punjabo, I can confirm that only docking toolbar/panel information are written to the registry. For my position on docking toolbar/panel, please see, so I am of the opinion that this doesn't affect portability. However, I will update the 'Write settings to" field to reflect this information.

Midas 2008-02-25 04:01

Sorry Andrew, but I just have to disagree with your take on dockable toolbars, pointed by the link above.

While they might result in al the mentioned application misbehaviour, I find that when properly used by the developer they are a god send that allows the user to set the application interface exactly the way s/he wants by moving the toolbars around, resizing them, even hiding.

About the latest version of MP3Tag: I have been using this for a long time as a portable app, just by copying the install folder then uninstalling... I am glad this version makes it easy for user to make it truly portable. However, this version setup exe provides only German help files; I can't read German and I couldn't find the English help -- if it even exists...

So I removed the help folder; but the program started complaining that it needed to be reinstalled, because it couldn't find help files.

After some research, I found that it checks for the file 'helpmap.idx' in the help folder -- if you leave that file in place, you can remove the rest.

Still, an excelent portable app!

kiwichick 2008-03-06 13:22

Midas, I have found the same problem. As we aren't using the installer the default language isn't being installed as English so the help files will default to German. There are three ways to get around this:

1. Continue to use the old method of installing and copying the install folder (or just the help folder to your portable installation).

2. Go to and view the English help files online.

3. Go to and save the page as index.html and overwrite the German one in the help folder of the portable version. Unfortunately, this means the English version of Help will open when you select Contents from the Mp32tag Help menu, but if you select any other Help subjects from within the program the German pages will still open (obviously, because the German versions are still in the help folder). Of course you could save every English help page on the website by clicking every link but it seems easier to do a proper install and copy the help files.

kiwichick 2008-03-06 13:37

Just a thought. May be Andrew might like to make the English help folder available as separate download from here then we wouldn't need to go through the install/uninstall process.

Version 2.42 just released (2008-10-25).

I've been searching for a long time for a freeware alternative for Tag n' Rename without result... But now there's this... WOW! Great renaming features. Ease of use. Displayed info. Real killer app! Thanks!

baysakhal 2009-03-16 23:45

It didn't show [NSIS].nsi file in extracted, I've searched all my PC, but found nothing on *.nsi weird a, hope it will work anyway. Good Luck everybody!

Dagenham 2009-03-29 02:03

Version 2.43 just released (2009-03-28).

calvin 2009-04-15 13:35

Mp3Tag can be made portable using the amazing app called JauntePE. The registry is redirected to a folder in my pendrive and all configuration is always with me. I will use my "jaunterized" version until the mp3tag devolpers team release a portable official launcher

Nick 2009-04-15 22:27

I was going to skip this as FLACs were not on the list, but it turns out that it does do them. Here is the list of supported formats:

carls 2009-05-02 19:34

Something is wrong here. Commodo's Defender finds all kinds of dubious changes to programs like Secunia's PSI and PC Tools Spyware Doctor during MP2tag installation. This had better have a good explanation !

Colwing 2009-05-07 05:22

Note that this program's author has posted instructions for deploying MP3tag to a portable device here:

purpler 2009-05-24 17:34

it does its job, believe me!
i hate tags, and MP3Tag happen to erase all of them in matter of seconds.. Killer App!

Tester 2009-10-07 02:21

I am confused with this author, so many fix, fix here and fix there, some of them are old bugs, just see version history (i.e, v2.44b Beta). Other side, this app is excellent, yeah sorry if I wrong.

OZLperez11 2009-10-24 01:20

This program sort of saved my life! I lost like half of my music (about 1 GB worth of music) but I'm not so worried cause all I have to do is go back and see which songs I have to download for a certain artist using the freedb tool and that way I can keep track of my songs and manage my music well.

Nik 2009-12-03 04:41

Can somebody please tell me how can I extract the .exe file without installing it

Billy Bob 2010-03-14 00:06

Nik - go look at the line which says "Download the installer and extract to a folder". The word extract should be blue, that's a clickable link. Follow it and it will tell you how to extract using a program called Universal Extractor

Wolfghost 2010-03-14 13:51

The prog writes settings to programdata/mp3tag with this:

How to extract: Download the installer and extract to a folder of your choice. Delete $PLUGINSDIR and [NSIS].nsi. Create a blank file in the same folder called mp3tag.cfg. Launch Mp3tag.exe.

Stealth [?]: Yes

jamvaru 2010-06-02 19:40

i got an error when extracting the setup file

jamvaru 2010-06-02 19:58

worked doing it as the above link suggests, in the forum, but is it stealth?

MarK 2010-08-10 19:06

I could not extract it with UniversalExtractor:

"It appears to be a(n) Nullsoft installer, which is supported, but extraction failed."

Harry 2010-09-25 16:54

Same here, MarK.

Hawk 2010-09-26 03:30

Same here, @MarK & @Harry. :(

webfork 2010-09-26 23:37

Mark: instructions updated -- thanks.

MarkK 2010-10-10 21:58

Yes, that works. Thanks.

lurker 2010-11-19 16:41

I prefer Tagscanner, which has the same features but a better looking interface

webfork 2010-12-18 19:03

Really like it. If the name of the music service you got the file from has plastered their name all over the song title, album name, etc. this is a great way to get it off. Select all the files, make changes, and then save. Sweet.

Gmacri 2011-01-23 14:30

The link in the web page is for the old version: mp3tagv247bsetup.exe

Magibon 2011-03-25 20:27

im a huge fan of this app., are there programs that offer more features? yes.. but this does the job and quick.

I love that it's free, portable, and stealth.
I have had dealings with the creator, and he was absolutely opened to suggestions. Unlike other creators who take offense.

This is a quality app., and def. a keeper!

Tim 2011-05-09 05:17

When the instructions say to delete $PLUGINSDIR does that include all the files contained in it or do I move the files contained in that directory to the parent directory?

ChemZ 2011-05-09 08:49

@Tim: Delete the whole directory.

n00bguy 2011-05-13 14:12

how to create a blank file?

webfork 2011-05-13 15:26

n00bguy: just use a text editor (like notepad) and save a file with nothing in it.

Mike 2011-05-14 01:49

Absolutely awesome app! Very flexible, very powerful and just the tag editor I've been looking for.

PortaFreeUser 2011-06-02 16:29

I've used this program in the past and it's OK, but lately I use AudioShell (works within Windows Properties) and Foobar2000's built-in tag editor. Foobar recently added image support in the recent betas, so the next full version will be OK for this type of thing. The recent beta is actually pretty stable in most ways.

Magibon 2011-06-02 21:47

i just realized i haven't been adding "GDIPLUS.dll" and have had no problems?

anyone know why it's listed as a requirement?

Tester 2011-06-02 22:27

Mostly your system already have :-)

gimmegimme free portable apps 2011-06-04 03:47

Great freeware. Works fine and it's a very decent alternative to MP3 Tag & Rename.

rokth 2011-07-03 16:42

doesn't extract with 7zip anymore

I am Baas 2011-07-03 16:57

Extracted just fine with 7-Zip 9.20

webfork 2011-07-06 17:58

Thanks for checking Baas -- added a note to the entry.

humpty 2011-10-14 23:36

I think u should mention apps that connect to the internet when opened. In this case, this apps connects twice ;

'Mp3tag - the universal Tag editor' from your computer wants to connect to [], port 80

AdrianK_IT 2012-07-20 19:12

A brilliant piece of software. Also, it extracts OK with 7-zip Portable v4.65

rogerthedodger 2012-10-17 00:26

Great software, I changed from tagscanner a while back to this one and I wont be going back. The interface is much nicer too.

benetti 2012-10-24 20:40

Hmm, when extracting the last version, strangely I see in 7zip there are some files twice in same folder (EN, DE) so when you try to extract the program, it ask for overwriting. I recommend install it and then copy, Sandboxie is very good for this.

Jimmy Neutron 2013-01-11 03:03

Go to Tools > Options > Updates and untick "Check for updates on startup" to keep the program from calling home.

Mike.S.G. 2013-05-23 05:16

... don't make it harder than need be, using 7-Zip v9.20 works very good on this installer, just use the correct 'rename' function before extraction - this is what works pretty good to date.

I believe when there are duplicates 'DE' extracts first then 'EN'. So, for those who want English will use 'auto rename existing files', this should rename all 'DE' duplicates, adding '_1'. An easy way to test is to open the index.html file in .\help, if memory serves me right, index_1.html should be 'DE'.

'EN' users will want to remove all '_1' files when using 'auto rename existing...'.

If 'DE' is what you're after use 'auto rename', this will rename all the 'EN' files, adding '_1' to the name. 'DE' users will want to remove all '_1' files when using 'auto rename'.

Most of the dupes are in .\help, and a few others in .\export. Make sure to only delete the duplicates and not the neutral files, those files that are for both 'DE' and 'EN', there will only be one file of a given name when neutral.

Hi folks,

First time using this Portable version from here ... works good, opens up and edits and closes just fine ... but couple of Questions

Q1: Why is the Application still calling Home Sometimes once and sometimes twice?

Q2: If this is Truly "Portable" why am I NOT able to open up more than one Version at a time?

I have had version 2.43 Installed for awhile ... and I recall when I tried to upgrade the Newer versions were not working good so, I unistalled and went back to 2.43 version ... and I had a hard time finding the Old Version ...

So, now I opened my Installed version 2.43 and then tried Opening the Portable 2.58 and it would Not Open up ... then I closed my 2.43 version and now I could Open up the 2.58 version.

So, would appreciate if anyone cold explain this.

smaragdus 2014-08-23 14:54

Mp3tag 2.63 has just been released.

Checker 2014-08-23 15:47

@ smaragdus: Thanks ... and updated ;)

rajagopalpv 2015-08-05 10:17

Where is the download option. When I clicked on Download on the takes me to Mp3tag website and it does not have any zip file there.

jtemple 2015-10-11 14:30

Version 2.72 doesn't seem to extract properly with 7-Zip.

AdrianK_IT 2015-11-15 14:44

@jtemple: Agree; just tried to upgrade, had to restore earlier version from backup

jtemple 2015-12-20 14:04

2.73 extracts properly with 7-Zip once again.

nicolwh 2016-10-08 10:38

I also got an error, what should I do?

webfork 2016-10-08 23:35

I just retested the extract instructions with the latest 7zip. It's working fine.

PacMan13x 2016-11-13 19:22

Wow it works! I tried the latest at the time of writing this comment Mp3tag v2.79 and 7-zip v16.04 on Windows 7. Thank you tedpoe!!

denzi 2016-12-01 01:36

Extract with 7-zip 16.04 (.paf.exe), but run Mp3tag without add folder and file named "mp3tag.cfg" is okay, added folder and file named "mp3tag.cfg", Mp3tag show "Access denied"
