I installed this yesterday for first time. I couldn't figure out how it was working at first. Then realized the tor button was not installed when it seemed like it should have been. So I added that firefox add-on manually and then it worked. The add-on just makes it easy to switch between settings (either regular settings, or tor settings). I didn't have to play with any other stuff. Just make sure the programs are running. Thanks for this software! Cool stuff.

great! i could never get tor portable by any set of instructions, this thing seems too work just fine.

spchtr 2007-07-25 14:12

For some reason the file I'm getting from sourceforge is giving me a "not a Win32 application" error? Any ideas?

Lyndon 2007-07-25 19:14

spchtr: you probably have the same problem as me. The download didn't complete and filesize is 0.
I found the file here ... http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/p/po/portabletor/

runner 2007-07-27 08:10

in my factory I'm running under a squid proxy...
someone can help me in configure tor and privoxy to work?

M@tty 2007-08-01 06:01

This program is not stealth, use Torvox instead: http://portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=6618

Steve Morley 2007-08-04 10:54

I have updated the software and remedied some Application Data problems to make it truely stealth, as well as updating Tor to fix major security problems. Upgrade is strongly recommended. Visit http://portabletor.sf.net for the latest version.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the build! Criticism is welcome via email at silivrenion@gmail.com .

You have to change torrc config file e.g. add
HttpProxy squid_ip:squid_port
HttpsProxy squid_ip:squid_port

More info on http://tor.eff.org

Steve Morley 2007-08-08 09:06

The latest revision has several false positives. Out of 32 engines on VirusTotal, 6 found a positive of some kind.

There is no trojan in the application. For more information, please visit http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=722896 .

Anon99 2007-09-05 17:25

Can't use this program anymore becuase Avast! appears to have it totally shut down due to worm. Please update the software so it works without virus/worm errors. Thanks! Also, please have download link with MD5 so we know the file we are downloading is correct file.

Steve Morley 2007-09-12 03:29

Avast causes no false positives with the software -- I'm using Avast as I develop the applications. Try updating your virus database?

There's an MD5 available on the site now, and a new version.

M@tty 2007-09-14 02:31

To Steve: Your version is again, not stealth. The newest version of Tor saves it's State file in the %AppData% folder.

Download the newest version of Torvox (http://portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=6618) and check out the Source to see how I handle this.

Steve Morley 2007-09-14 13:22

If there is a problem with Avast and the program, you can set PortableTor as an exception in the program. Check the documentation on how to do that. It's kind of easy to blame a virus protection company, because the signature the launcher gives is a false positive to some kind of virus. I've contacted the companies I could, which verified its their fault and removed it. Some companies didn't however.

M@tty, that's a bug in Tor itself, not just in the portability of either of our applications. Check out the post you made on the forum and look at the bug report that's being processed right now.

Myrddin Wyllt 2007-09-14 14:55

I strongly prefer xbBrowser, which incorporates Tor with a Firefox browser, and makes everything happen for you (did I mention it's PORTABLE, TOO?)

I'll be skipping this version.

Steve Morley 2007-09-15 01:14

One of the reasons for PortableTor is that its user configurable for more than web browsing.. you can use IM programs, IRC, etc. with it. Its simple, and although you need whatever program to actually use with it, some people like the ability to control what happens themselves. :)

M@tty 2007-09-15 11:55

Yeah, I never really liked using TorPark (or xB Browser as it is not called).

And yeah, I realise it is a problem in Tor which is why I said to have a look at my source to see how I handle it, which is basically just waiting a bit then deleting the file.

Deep Thought 2007-10-23 09:58

I get a error stating

Error authenticating To Tor

Vidalia was unable to authenticate to Tor (control socket is not connected)
Please check your port authentication settings

What Should I do?

Deep Thought 2007-10-23 10:01

Then there is also another error

Vidalia.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x00afd0b2" refrence memory at "0x000000000". The memory could not be "read"

Click on Ok to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug program

Both buttons just cause it to quit

Dagenham 2007-11-04 08:09

The new version (released at 2007.11.02) works without problems for me (tried with Lynx text-mode browser). Remember to set the proxy connection in your application to

M@tty 2007-11-08 10:38

Deep Thought, try using a different control port for Tor.

It shouldn't crash though, are you using your own version of Tor or the one that came bundled?

mosaic 2007-11-09 02:26

Anyons has tried it on Vista? It did not list Vista as supported OS.

Banshee 2007-11-09 04:58

Rather than shamelessly trampling all over this attempt whilst desperately plugging your own effort, why don't you try to be a bit more cooperative/supportive.

Simply filling these comments with "Use my version, use my version" adds nothing, and makes you look a bit desperate for recognition to be honest.

Sorry if this seems harsh, but I think it needs to be said.

PB 2007-11-25 23:44

Vista is not supported...sorry, if you are Vista users. However, talking of support, the portable tor site offers a guide (http://wiki.noreply.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/Portable_Tor) on how to DIY. It's well written so that anybody can do it step by step. You can also get some insight about how these applications are working. You can see the reason why Vista is not supported, too.

M@tty 2007-12-02 10:58

I've tried to give Steve the most help in improving his versions, and the most technical feedback on them. So, rather than posting a pointlessly long post, that rather hypocritically also adds nothing in terms of content to the comments, suggest you check the forums, ey? ;)

Silivrenion 2008-01-01 13:01

It works fine on Vista. Actually, the software is compiled and put together on Vista, and tested on Vista before its released. :)

The guide on the noreply.org forums I actually wrote, too. :)

glistam 2008-01-02 16:07

Any one have any luck with getting this to work with Pidgin (I use the portable version)? How would you configure Pidgin, for instance would I set the proxy type to HTTP, SOCKS 4, SOCKS 5 or something else? Thanks.

Silivrenion 2008-01-23 08:30

It will work with Pidgin if Pidgin supports proxies. If you want to send your data through both Vidalia and Tor, use these proxy settings:

HTTP Proxy
Address: localhost
Port: 8118

If you wish to have the data only go through Tor, useful for applications that have IM or non-web traffic, use these settings instead:

SOCKS5 Proxy
Address: localhost
Port: 9050

Hope this helps!

M@tty 2008-01-23 09:34

With the new update this is now stealth.

Wizard 2008-01-26 10:26

While TOR and it's derivatives will hide data sent and received and your true destination, take care. If you use it at work your net admin can tell if you go to a TOR router and they may come after you for it. I know people who have been fired for attempting to hide their net use at work with TOR.

Robbo 2008-01-29 12:51

Forgive my ignorance, but I am trying to set this up and do not seem to be successful in doing so. I have dowloaded the folder and have successfully run vidalia/tor. All lights are on and blinking (as it were.) I then went into my Firefox and changed the http proxy settings (as well as all other proxies) but I do not appear to be running stealth by any definition of the name. I'm not sure exactly how to tell if I'm running stealth, but I went to a website that tells you what your DNS is and it still recognized me. What else should I do to get this correctly running. Thanks!

Silivrenion 2008-01-29 23:52

Robbo, for convenience, please use the Torbutton extension, which once clicked on will easily configure everything for you on the Firefox side.

In the Vidalia control panel, Tor should be started by default. Make sure it is.

Robbo 2008-01-30 09:00

Thanks for your help!

L 2008-03-01 12:49

I really want to download this, but i'm scared to since a few comments state viruses and such, and i have no protection at all =\

so.. i dont know

Silivrenion 2008-05-07 07:07

47,000 downloads and no viruses. The problem that occured happens with all new software packages... they must be authenticated with virus scanners so they know it's not a virus. The code for the executable is fully available within the package after it is extracted. You can trust on the reliability of the package here.

nusushika 2008-06-23 10:49

Hey Deep Thought, I got the clue!
You said you got the error for checking control port authentication settings and I have the same problem. But now I found that I disable the Communication Port (COM 1) from Device Manager. You can follow these steps below to get rid of this error:

1. Right click on My Computer on desktop or Start Menu and then choose Properties
2. Select Hardware tab
3. Click Device Manager button
4. In the new Device Manager window look for Port (COM & LPT), double click it or click the plus symbol on the left.
5. Right click Communication Port (COM 1) and Enable it, then enjoy tor! ^^

Bakednut 2008-08-29 18:31

I know I don't have the portable version or at least I don't think I do but if someone could help me I would appreciate it, I get this message in my message log, what does it mean, and how can I fix it? Thank you in advance

"Aug 29 20:13:20.968 [Warning] Received http status code 404 ("No such domain") from server '' while fetching consensus directory."

Sean 2008-11-30 14:39

@bakednut: That's not an error with PT. That's just PT's interpretation of a common server error. It simply means that there is no folder called 'consensus' on

dentrite 2009-01-14 22:20

hi everyone,I run into a problem while using PortableTor, the vidalia GUI keeps asking password, and i go to settings to set a new one, but it doesn't work, anyone can help?

test 2009-02-03 15:54

Anyone able to integrate this with u3? I tried to make a u3 package, but it kept failing install.

M@tty 2009-02-10 13:29

You can use PackageFactory for this: http://www.eure.ca/

Ikke 2010-01-13 17:44

Sucks big time. It's just not working with the new version of Vidalia. It keeps stubbornly creating a new settings directory on the host computer whatever you try.
Sorry, this is useless.

Piepo 2010-01-14 00:58

No, you're wrong. It DOES certainly work.
Make sure all the relative paths are absolutely right, because that's usually the main problem if it doesn't work.

M@tty 2010-01-14 19:36

@Ikke: I'm not too sure what you're referring to as 0.1.15 is the latest stable release of Vidalia, and that is the release found in this build. The version of Tor is now outdated, but they usually ensure backwards compatibility so upgrading should be a straight binary swap. The official build does need updating but I haven't had any communication with silivrenion for quite some time. Please post back with more information about your problem, and what operating system you are using.

TORrocks 2010-02-23 12:09

I think I may have done something wrong here... I installed the latest version onto my drive fine and I can get TOR running, but then I can't get my browsers running o it from there. I use the portable FireFox and have torbutton, which has worked for me in the past, but whenever I try to use torbutton with portableTOR, it asks if polipo is running properly. Did the install go wrong, or do i have to try using the normal proxy setting for FF?

P.S. I really want this to work because I really like TOR and it is really hard to find anything like it when you live under the great firewall of china, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

M@tty 2010-02-23 22:08

Try right-clicking on Torbutton and go to "Preferences". Select "Use custom proxy settings" and make sure the HTTP proxy port is 8118. Alternatively try FoxyProxy.

Legobas 2010-09-09 07:53

Download link does not exist anymore! (404)

webfork 2010-09-09 18:19

Thanks legobas - download link updated.

DeepAnger 2010-09-11 08:00

Thanks but this is an old version.
It seems like portable TOR is dead now...

M@tty 2010-09-11 13:08

I apologise for the lack of activity on PortableTor. I had been keeping it up to date but I stopped having contact with Steve/Angela so releases weren't made public. It's a sad end to a program that was clearly popular from the number of downloads. I'm also not sure what's going on with the SourceForge project as neither of us are listed as developers anymore...

webfork 2010-09-11 22:11

M@tty: PortableTor is a great program. Thanks for whatever work you've done on that and I hope you'll pick it back up or fork it if the other developers have moved on.

Glenn Snead 2011-02-25 22:53

If this project is no longer in development, does anyone have the source? I'm not a developer by trade, but re-setting up the project is something I'd like to take on.
