AveDesk is a program that will give you the ability to have icons on your desktop that update themselves. Each icon is in fact a "desklet," or a plug-in that can provide a variety of functions. A desklet can be just a regular shortcut, a mail checker, a calendar, a clock, etc. depending on the desklets programmer.

Features a wealth of customization options for displaying desklets.

Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista
Writes settings to: Application Folder
Dependencies: Pre-WinXP systems will need GDIPLUS.DLL in the application folder.
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice
  2. Open the file settings_overrides.ini in a text editor
  3. Remove the semicolon (";") in front of the lines NoFileAssociations=true and NoMultipleUserAwareness=true and save
  4. Launch AveDesk.exe
What's new?
  • Better support for mini-applications / widgets / desklet.
  • Several feature-rich new desklets.
  • Hardware accelerated flip and closing effects.
  • New user-interface.
  • Big architecture changes.
  • Unique library of skinned, alpha-blended controls.
  • New scriptable desklet: AveScripter.

  • Desklets are skin able.
  • ShowCase adds an extra level on top of your desktop.
  • Windows Vista support.

AveDesk v1.4 seems to be buggy on modern Windows -- see the dedicated forum at http://www.aqua-soft.org/forum/forum/47-aves-apps/ ...

AveDesk has a new web-site - http://www.avedesk.org/
and it seems that the latest version is 1.4 as Emka has mentioned above.

AveDesk is not freeware, and perhaps does not belong on a list of Portable Freeware.

From the readme: "AveDesk is not freeware, but DONATIONWARE. This means that you are not free to use this application if you wish,
but that you should donate a small amount of money to the AveDesk authors if you like AveDesk and use it frequently.
Donating is not enforced, it's rather a legal trick to make sure no-one runs away with AveDesk for free :-)."

After first removing the semicolons (as listing above), I ran the program. RegShot 1.7 reported 309 keys added and 339 values added to my registry (Win XP sp2). Any ideas???

I don't think that qualifies as "portable"....
