It is nice to see a fully GPL'd bittorrent client. FDM is as well, but doesn't seem to support all the features common to most torrent clients.

I will try this with a Puppy Linux download to test ease of use etc.

Update: I was unable to download Puppy Linux with this client, it registered the torrent as "stalled"

Also I do not know if this has been mentioned before but ...

even if you download the qBittorrentPortable_2.7.3_with_Python_Development_Test_1.paf you will need admin rights to write to the registry before the search engine will work.

A few shortcomings I intend to bring to the developers attention:
1) No obvious way to control the torrent sites searched.
2) No obvious way to configure the Client to integrate with PortableApps.com browsers, or other portable browsers.
3) The need to write to the registry for the location of the Python this should be handled with an INI file,
or a command line switch, etc.

I will contact the PortableApps.com package developers, and the Application developer, and I recommend anyone with hope for this application send a request as well.

Its hard to test all the operations of a given program to make sure there isn't some obscure operation that will write to the registry. Nice catch.

We've noted that adding sites to the search engine is currently unsupported on the app homepage. As admin rights are only necessary for that (and only work with Python), it's not an issue for the current release.

Unfortunately, the software itself only supports looking in the registry for the python location (I believe, I'd need to double-check), which requires admin rights and can mess with local stuff, so we won't implement that in an official release at present. And that's required to do any changes to the search engine included. We'll need a request for enhancement to the base app to fix that. If uninterested, we may do our own build/modification to fix it as we have with a few other apps we package in PortableApps.com Format.

As for configuring it to open a specific browser, we'll likely be handling that at the PortableApps.com Platform level. If the main dev adds in a custom configuration for it as well, we'll expose that in the portable version, of course.

All those files are removed on exit. Unless you run qbittorrent.exe directly or don't let it close properly. If you run it within sandboxie, it likely won't work right as sandboxie shuts down its virtual machine without allowing the launchers to clean up first.

Despite the great work by UserFriendly and Joby on making uTorrent non-stupid, I was really looking for any excuse to not use a closed torrent client and so far qBittorrent is working well. As such I have added it to the database:

I went with the PA version for now because I just repeated guinness' test with v.3.0.8 and got the same result. If someone can figure out how to make it behave portable natively I'd be happy to switch.

Hmm just testing qBittorrent from portableapps and I might be missing something but it only connects to a single tracker despite having multiple trackers listed. It also starts with the first one in the list and if that's not working you have to wait for it to timeout before it even tries the next one.

OK found it. Options -> Advanced -> Always announce to all trackers

If you delete the bundled language files, the uncompressed filesize drops to around 6.5MB.

Don't like the fact that there is no "Add Torrent via URL" button.

I just did a download comparison with uTorrent 2.2.1 vs. qBittorent vs. Halite. All clients used the same connection / port / BT settings.

(My DL | UL speed according to Speedtest.net is 1.8 MB | 0.12 MB /sec.)

uTorrent downloaded the fastest at around 1MB/sec.
Second was qBittorrent averaging around 800-900kbps/sec.
Third was Halite. Very inconsistent speeds 200-600kbps/sec. (Might need to retest this.)

Next: Memory usage after initial bootup.

Halite was lightest at around 2.8MB.
Second was uTorrent at around 4.5MB.
Third was qBittorent at around 24MB.

Next: Memory usage while downloading.

uTorrent was lightest at around 5MB.
Second was Halite at around 30MB.
Third was qBittorrent at around 40-50MB.

These are very unscientific benchmarks, so don't read into them too much. Going to stick with uTorrent for the time being since it (still) does the job for me.

The extra memory will be from it being QT based. The speed issue may be down to qBittorrent's defaults being a bit weird.

Have to agree to the lack of a add torrent by URL option or the ability to paste a magnet link in to it is annoying.
