I recently came across an article an article that talked about a program called Google Map Saver (GSM). GSM is freeware, (claimed to be) portable, and it allows the user to download big Google Maps directly on to their computer as image files (png, targa, bmp).

I think that happens if you only activate the program, I have no idea why the developer has done this? But seems a good program to combine with TrekBuddy...not a portable application but a C++ application for mobile devices.
