TeraCopy - alternative file copier

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

First, TeraCopy version 3.0 is as buggy as hell:

Image

Second "Remove selected" and "Remove transferred" triggers a message:

Image

so for me TeraCopy version 3.0 is a demo- the already transferred stuff will stay for ever and will be copied time again- what an abomination.

Third- the image provided in the database entry is for TeraCopy Pro- on my system the graph of the demo doesn't look that good:

Image

Fourth- it offered to send bug report and it extracted data from my mail client which I think is a privacy violation.

In short- for me TeraCopy version 3.0 is not just a demo but a buggy garbage to boot.

I retested the latest version of TeraCopy and -- whatever issues were happening with the program when Smaragdus tested it last -- they seem to have been resolved. I've added a note about the pro version to the entry.

Is there any reason for a portable installation of TeraCopy?

1) I installed it according to the How to extract, got one entry in Programs & Features list and two in the context menu.

2) I extracted it using Universal Extractor, moved the content of "app" folder to a different folder. There are three duplicates, i deleted "TeraCopy.2.exe", "TeraCopyExt.2.exe" and "TeraCopyService.2.exe" and renamed "TeraCopy.1.exe", "TeraCopyExt.1.exe" and "TeraCopyService.1.exe" by removing ".1".

At the end the folder size of 1) and 2) (without the uninstall files) is identical.

So why install?

There's a case to be made for not using the install process when there are other routes, but I recommend it in this case based on two things:

1. Developer support is generally easier when you follow their processes
2. Fewer steps in the extract process mean it's more accessible to casual users

And...

3. From my own experience, TeraCopy is not entirely straightforward as a portable, meaning features and settings differ according to which way you proceed.

First I interpret "Removed transferred" to mean remove the source file if it already exists in the destination (ie was "transferred" in the past), rather than remove already-transferred files from the destination (I could be wrong).

But most importantly, as of 12/21/2020 the TeraCopy web page "Feature Matrix" shows that the free version (still) does not have the feature "Edit file lists". That same page describes that feature as
Edit file lists [Pro]

Unnecessary files and folders can be removed to reduce the transfer time.
Also, it does not specify how it handles
  • symbolic links to files
  • symbolic links to directories (robocopy, eg, handles them differently than files)
  • hard links
  • junctures
Personally, I want the link/juncture itself copied. I do not want the program to follow through the link and copy the actual file or dir. I suspect from its forum posts by users that TeraCopy will follow the link/juncture and copy more content.

Yeah it looks like they removed the portable option and I wasn't able to make any headway with Uniextract or other tools. We might need to move this program into private status.

If memory serves, TeraCopy doesn't have a file transfer speed limiter.

Thanks for the update.

TeraCopy 3.10 still contains the file Portable.txt with the same content as the one from version 2:

Code: Select all

Rename this file to 'Portable' (remove .txt) to keep settings in this folder.
I installed it using Sandboxie and it is still portable but not stealth.

These are the default files resulted from the installer:

These are the files in my portable version:

I have updated the extraction instructions to use the "/extract" command to extract the files from the installer.

This seems to also automatically create the "Portable" null file required for portable operation.

If there's anything I missed, please let me know.

Thanks!
