Good news. I've been trying to make a go of this program as a direct replacement for Explorer with mixed results, but I definitely like that its seeing active development.

I'm roughly following it for a couple of months and while it's in a constant development with updates appearing regularly, I have an impression that the actual project velocity is not great, sadly. The updates are usually minor.
Too bad that the project is written largely in Russian and in Delphi...

Hmm..the changelog that you posted is obsolete. The latest version that it lists is 0.5.1 Beta.

Sorry there. The main website is linking to 0.5.3 as the stable version, so 0.5.5 is for testing.

Anyway, more to the point, here's the changelog from the softpedia page (that I guess didn't get added to the subsequent "full changelog" page.

There are some clarification:
- the "builder" of ver 0.5.5 il Dirk Paehl http://www.paehl.com/open_source/?Double_Commander
- the right number of version is SVN 4252 (ver 0.5.3 is SVN 4250 ...) and this is a beta (not an alpha as on Softpedia site ..)
- the download page of ver 0.5.5 is on http://www.box.com http://www.box.net/shared/t5o7x3okec (I don't know if this link work properly)
- in this portable version (0.5.5) there is an error:

Code: Select all

   There is an error in file "doublecmd.xml" of Portable version:
   inside row 4 You (Dirk Paehl) wrote:
   <UseConfigInProgramDir>False</UseConfigInProgramDir>
   instead of
   <UseConfigInProgramDir>True</UseConfigInProgramDir>
   as in release 0.5.3 in the main site http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net/
   ... and this error create a folder in:
   C:\Programs\User\Application Data\doublecmd
this folder (47.3 KB) contain some files (text, di configuration and .bar files)
- the only alpha version is on http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net/ and it's SVN 4268 (but not work properly because the "command line" of DC remain open)

I haven't tried doublecmd for a while and it feels very nice. I could set up portable file associations (with custom icons) and portable right-click menu items too, which I couldn't in other freeware file managers (at least not the way I would liked). "%commander_path%" can be used for portable paths, like this:

Code: Select all

[bmp|cur|emf|gif|hdr|hdri|icl|ico|jp2|jpe|jpeg|jpg|pcd|pdn|pcx|png|psd|tga|tif|tiff|xcf|wbmp|webp|wmf]
Name=Images
Icon=%commander_path%\..\IrfanView\i_view32.exe
Open="%commander_path%\..\IrfanView\i_view32.exe" %p
IrfanView="%commander_path%\..\IrfanView\i_view32.exe" %p
This file manager is the closest to totalcmd imo (regarding features & customization).

@joby_toss: I'm afraid you can't
