What information can I get from MediaInfo?

* General: title, author, director, album, track number, date, duration...
* Video: codec, aspect, fps, bitrate...
* Audio: codec, sample rate, channels, language, bitrate...
* Text: language of subtitle
* Chapters: count of chapters, list of chapters
and so on...
If you disable the update option it dont try to phone home.

It looks portable for me, but i´m a noob ;) ,so it would be nice if someone else could test it.

I use this, it's a great program.
I hadn't checked its portability before, but it looks like you're right. It uses "MediaInfo.cfg" in the program directory for storing its settings and the registry seems to be clean (although this should have been checked while installing the program).
The shell extension should be disabled. Otherwise it definitely will use the registry.

Oh... I don't think checking for updates is the same as phoning home, but that's a matter of opinion.
Anyway, good suggestion.

Just tested it out and it is indeed portable. Will be adding it shortly.

[EDIT] Upon further review, it appears that 95,98,ME need a special unicode layer in order to function, so I'm going to list it as 2K/XP only and wait for Andrew to write an appropriate disclaimer for earlier OS's.

I tested it on Win95, but found that it won't run even with UNICOWS.DLL in the application folder.

The reason was because it requires MSIMG32.DLL too, which is not available on Win95/NT.

It works fine on Win98 (so presumably on WinME as well). Therefore, I am putting this down as Win98/ME/2K/XP.

Hi, I am the developper of MediaInfo, I would like to reply to some question here :
Toxteth O'Grady wrote:It uses "MediaInfo.cfg" in the program directory for storing its settings and the registry seems to be clean (although this should have been checked while installing the program).
I confirm.
If this file is on a read only disk, no problems
Toxteth O'Grady wrote:The shell extension should be disabled. Otherwise it definitely will use the registry.
I confirm too, this is an option to modify Windows explorer, I am forced to modify the registry...

As TPFC Fan said, MediaInfo "phone home" if you let "checking for updates" option, it does something more than updates, it contacts some anonymous statistic websites, but only for this. No information other than your IP address (for unique visitor only), version of OS, screen size is sent.

Conclusion : if you desactivate The shell extension and update, MediaInfo modify nothing on the OS. if you only desactivate The shell extension, IE cache could be used for caching one page used for update checking, nothing more.

Could you change the homepage in :
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net
With this, the user will be redirected automaticly on the page with the rigth language. for example, I am french, I will be redirected on http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/fr, not the english page.
The reason was because it requires MSIMG32.DLL too, which is not available on Win95/NT.
Oups, I was not aware of this. I thougth that if you have IE 5 installed on Win95, It works... Because I use an interface of IE to check updates, and Microsft website says that I only need to have IE isntalled on Win95.
But in any cases, because Win95 is no more supported by MS, I will not work on it.
