RegCool

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

I think it's portable. Unfortunately my Regshot played up when I was testing this. So I'm not sure. It writes settings and an Undo log to the application folder

Hi Lupo73,
now it's available the version 3.629 and seem to be an official portable release:
I have tried the portable version of RegCool v. 3.629.
It is a very nice program but....:
1. when it start it need some time: is it nagware?
2. in the splash screen is showed the expiration date: 29/12/2008: is it a trial?
3. tha program start in german and it is not simple to switch to another language: You must search the button 'optionen' (next to last button on the right of second row from the top) and press 'Sprache', in the 'Sprachauswahl' menu You choose the english language and confirm.

I think that is a test-drive version before to release a shareware version.

Best regards

Topic update: RegCool v1.048 released (changelog at https://kurtzimmermann.com/regcoolversions_de.html).

NOTE: there could be a version mismatch here that I am unable to verify. RegCool was mentioned along other Kurt Zimmermann programs at viewtopic.php?t=23449. Further info follows.
https://kurtzimmermann.com/regcoolext_en.html wrote:RegCool is an advanced registry editor. In addition to all the features that you can find in RegEdit and RegEdt32, RegCool adds many powerful features that allow you to work faster and more efficiently with registry related tasks. Key Features: multiple undo and redo; search and replace; compare registries; cut, copy and paste; drag and drop; registry snapshot; backup and restore; defragment. RegCool is Shareware[!], written in Unicode and runs on all Windows versions from Windows XP onwards...

Shame RegCool isn't freeware anymore (although with a very long trial period, as can be surmised form the "About box" screenshot above); in my briefest of tests, it created a (mostly empty) folder structure at '%APPDATA%\RegCool'; but it also seemed its RegShot tool functionality did produce a Primo Chkunin compatible snapshot report, automatically named 'RegCool-x64.txt' and saved to program folder...

Download RegCool latest 32 or 64-bit portable version (untested!) from https://kurtzimmermann.com/index_d.html#features6-0.

@webfork: I suggest a move to "Portable Payware" for the time being. Removal of version info from OP subject would also be welcome. Thanks. :)

I had already noticed the issue of a trial period mentioned by Midas, and tried to query this with the developer but elicited no response. Very strange as there seems no means of providing payment.

Just to reiterate a comment I made in my HdCleaner post, the PortableUninstall program included in RegCool is useless.

I was somewhat surprised by the comment to the effect that the snapshot was saved to the program folder; is it also saved in AppName etc?

Overall I think it a pity that the author has made no effort to make his programs close to stealth.
Aside from this, they are worthy additions to any toolkits!

That is puzzling! Might it be a convoluted scheme to allow for future commercialization?

Due to the briefness of my testing, I'm not grasping the issue with PortableUninstall, which I didn't try, but I can positively confirm that no copy of the RegShot report was saved to '%APPDATA%'.

I completely agree, the joining of registry editing and snapshoting looks like a winning combo, IMHO.

May I request again that you remove the ' v 3.620' string from the subject of your original post in this thread so it better reflects the fact that it is the official forum topic for RegCool? Thanks in advance. :)

Some great news: a tabbed, smart registry manager/search program with loads of features is now listed as portable freeware:

https://kurtzimmermann.com/regcoolext_en.html
https://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE- ... able.shtml

... it's also seen updates as recent as this month.

FTR, RegCool latest version is v1.110, released 2019-09-09 (changelog is at https://kurtzimmermann.com/regcoolversions_de.html).

EDIT: I tried to assess if RegCool registry snapshooting features were ready for prime time as practical replacement for Primo/RegShot with mixed results -- I came away feeling they are mostly reliable and extremely fast but for the lack of filesystem monitoring and of an easy to use comparison tool like ChkUnin, which ultimately defeats its purpose. Testing will continue...

From RegCool's help file:

To create a snapshot of registry
  1. Click RegShot on the Tools menu.
  2. Select the opened registry
  3. Click Take Shot 1.
  4. After changes in registry click Take Shot 2.
  5. Click Compare Registries.

Pretty cool. Would like to see more people feedback....

Pros: Works fast, grabs everything, no question what's changed. Very nice.

Cons: Difficult to sort through all the results as it grabs *everything* when most of the time I just need a list of the primary keys, not all the changes. Prefer Zsoft Uninstaller system capture because it grabs filesystem data as well.

As does Primo, BTW (viewtopic.php?t=8164).

FYI, Zsoft Uninstaller is in TPFC's database (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2299).
