Flow Launcher

#1 Post by Mike.S.G. »

This is more of a discussion rather than a suggested submission.

I've been using Executor as a program launcher for a while but I'm not completely sold on it... one of the biggest issues is Executor will need to rebuild it's cache or something - not really sure what's going on but when I open it the load on my system will become heavy as Executor rebuilds a cache (or my list of apps???) causing the program to become slow and unresponsive for a moment... regardless, newer versions of the program seem to do this more whereas an older version (I used, 0.99b for ages it seemed) prior to v1.0 never had issues. I still like the program. I also wish I could have more control over the size of the search window as well, maybe bigger and wider, it appears there is a max size. I'll admit it may be at my end and my ignorance of how to properly tweak the settings but I've (checked/unchecked, lowered/raised, etc) settings many many times without success.

All of this which brings me to my curiosity of Flow Launcher, wonderin' if anyone has seen it or used it, if so what do you think about it.

-> Brief Introduction : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dikvhykTNg

There is a portable version, not sure if it's stealth.

The video is a short introduction by a Youtuber (not the dev).

Again, not a submission, just looking for feedback if you've tried it.

One look at the ZIP filesize of Flow Launcher tells me all I need to know. It's 192MB!

As for Executor, you should be able to disable its caching under the 'Settings - Indexing & Cache' options menu.
is it stealth? ;)

It bundles the .NET 5 runtimes in addition to the app itself and plugins.

You could also try Key Piranha:

For anyone that is testing Flow, can you let me know what the average memory usage is? Executor uses about 10MB RAM over here.

Edit - Flow uses about 135MB RAM according to this thread: https://github.com/Flow-Launcher/Flow.L ... -761001042. That's a little too high for me.

FindAndRunRobot is another one I like. Executor is my personal choice though, it works really well.

Yeah, Flow Launcher is too big a download and does more than I need so I passed on it, but it does look like a nice program if you need/want all the many features.

I've checked and unchecked many of Executor's options including the caching (icons & history only) - it works best with the modest caching settings I'm using so I'll live with it. I thought if Executor built an icon cache it wouldn't need to rebuild at times, I'm guessing this is what's happening... I've pinned a link to the taskbar and run the program from there, at times you'll see as the program slows when opening the dropdown to the the apps icon list - they are being redrawn, whatever is happening but it slows things to a crawl for maybe 20 seconds or so.

Like I had mentioned before prior to v1.0 this never happened with the 0.99 beta versions. I suppose I should post at Executor's forums and see if the dev can make sense of things or recommend a settings adjustment.
