I did a quick search for the top issue described and couldn't find anything. I wouldn't think that MS would spend any more energy on XP, especially during their push for another OS. But I guess it's entirely possible for something to to get through if they don't take much engineer effort to get them posted e.g. simple file updates. As far as legitimacy, I can't imagine someone getting malicious updates into that update process but I guess it's possible.

Surprising that XP is still getting updates! I got rid of my last Windows XP laptop about a year and a half ago.

Hope you are right about this phantom Security Updates bona fide legitimacy,
discarding the conjecture of an improbable plot to push malicious updates on a poor old unsuspecting XP machine...

...especially considering the bloody thing eventually installed itself anyway without asking...

No adverse effect detected so far, fingers crossed...

A quick search for the first update (KB2296011) says that this is from 2010:

Maybe you never updated your Windows XP install in many years? Or perhaps you recently added that old registry hack to get XP Embedded updates?

Checking the XP machine KB* logs, I find the last "out-of-support" Security Update officially released 09MAY2019 was KB4500331, duly applied 16MAY2019.
Before that, there are about 10 other KBxxx, all applied in 2017.

BTW, I never installed the registry hack to get XP Embedded support on the sly...maybe I should have ?...

I would have -- one way or the other, you paid for it and it's not like it's being actively supported...

Last official update for Windows XP was February 10, 2014, according to the official Microsoft Update Catalog. IMHO, __philippe found bogus updates.
