ConfigureDefender - modify native anti-virus settings

First mentioned as part of a testing process, Configure is a way to quickly modify Windows settings to let it take up more or less resources. I mostly loaded it up because I was trying to reduce the overall resource usage on a machine that doesn't need it. However, I ended up bumping a number of the settings up to be more secure, especially around MS Office .

Status: Portable, writes no settings. By virtue of the fact that it modifies system settings, it's not stealth.

EDIT: If you're having problems with the MsMpEng.exe file taking up a ridiculous CPU percentage, this program might help.

I found this while looking for a way to prevent the Defender scanner (MsMpEng.exe) from hogging the CPU. It is not supposed to do that, but sometimes it just jumps in at the least appropriate moment and brings the system to a craaaawl.

Setting the "Average CPU load while scanning" parameter to just 10% seems to have reign in the scanner so far. Will report back if any problems crop up later.

Just a quick follow up.

The change I made in using ConfigureDefender to lower "Average CPU load while scanning" worked very well in arresting the runaway CPU hogging by Windows Defender, and I had not encountered any such problem since then.

I have added an entry for this to the database:

Thanks for doing that -- I made some minor additions to the entry and voted.

Thanks for the tip, I'm testing that right now -- it was at 20% on my sluggish i3 desktop -- will vote afterwards... 8)
