Update here: I'm happy to report that there were some major fines associated with Avast spyware:

"Avast promised users that its products would protect the privacy of their browsing data but delivered the opposite," said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a statement on Thursday. "Avast's bait-and-switch surveillance tactics compromised consumers' privacy and broke the law."

The company pulled one of those switcheroo things like Meta did where they created a parent company to dump all the bad PR attached to the old company. Needless to say I recommend against using any and all software from Gen Digital, Piriform, Avast, AVG, CCleaner, etc. and related products.
