Tree Notebook - new information manager

#1 Post by MakoSoft »

Tree Notebook is new, well-designed and professionally written,
friendly in everyday use, information manager. Simple and effective.
This is a hierarchical (tree based) folders and notes organizer.
Note can contain rich-text and file attachments for example with graphics.

The notebook consists of two parts: open public part (without password),
and encrypted private part. Very important notes can be protected from
accidental modifying or deleting. Of course, backup database is included.
Export and import data are possible in a few popular formats.

Global search and local search are available, with many options.
Notes can be sorted and arranged manually by drag-and-drop.

Data in Tree Notebook can be distinguished in many ways: by using
various fonts, colored flags and hundreds nice icons to choose from.

User interface is well readable and clear. We can see it at this image
which comes from the Tree Notebook home page:

Tree Notebook has typical Windows setup, but is not writing data
to registry. User settings are stored in a separate text file.
It is possible simply to copy files (about 15 MB) from installation
folder to USB memory stick / pendrive. Working as portable well.

Interesting little app. In my perfunctory testing, the registry key noted by smaragdus (👋) holds only an "HomePath" value pointing to the Tree Notebook's folder location.

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LenaGames\Tree Notebook]
"HomePath"="C:\\Users\\User\\Desktop\\tnote"
Somewhat more obscured are the settings contained in the 'Tree Notebook.options' file, a plain text file that contains several absolute path entries. Most of them appear to work fine after being edited and replaced by relative ones, but the "[Lang]" section holds the pointers for the UI language and the location of the help file and always reverts back to absolute paths after a run of Tree Notebook... 🤓

Nothing that yaP wouldn't solve, though. 🤔

Tree Notebook has new version with better portability

The Author of Tree Notebook now made available the corrected
version 1.0.2 of application, appropriately to reported above
on this forum critical remarks about TN ver. 1.0.1 portability.

Moreover, now is a separate really portable zipped version
of Tree Notebook ready for download (about 7.6 MB):
http://treenotebook.net/tnote-portable.zip

Fast and professional reply of the Author is encouraging to
further tests and everyday using this interesting program.

Confirmed. Tree Notebook v1.0.2 saves its settings to 'notebook-settings.ini' (plus the afore mentioned 'Tree Notebook.options', this time without any visible absolute paths), provided a 'portable.txt' file resides alongside the program executable. Totally stealth in my testing. Nice going. 8)

Further (cosmetic) suggestions:
- make UI elements smaller (or at least user configurable);
- make notes list column headers interactive (e.g., left click to toggle sort by column values, double-click for auto-sizing column width, drag'n'drop for re-ordering horizontally);
- allow export/importing single or multiple notes from plain text (or, better, also RTF or HTML).

Thanks for the submission.

@MakoSoft & @Midas
I tested Tree Notebook and I confirm that it is portable and stealth.

I am surprised that the developer responded so fast releasing a truly portable version. At first glance Tree Notebook looks very promising.
