I noticed that there are some new entries in "Categories" but also some mistakes, duplicates and just unclear/useless entries.

The categories in the editor are consolidated from both public and private entries, as opposed to the filtered list in the All categories page.

I am not sure how this can be reconciled. Purging them will be a lot of work (because you will also need to fix up all the database entries that refer to the purged categories). Plus they will be messed up again pretty quickly by users adding new private entries.

Perhaps I can add a checkbox that makes the list display filtered categories only. That will clean up the messiness visually without actually purging those private categories from the database.

Is that a satisfactory workaround?

Anybody can add random senseless category out of their mind? Didn't knew about that, I was sure that all categories was made by you.
How about removing such possibility and clear all that mess?

I believe even many "normal" categories has zero entries. There could be some "transitional period" after when will be decided which categories should be removed to fix possible "orphaned" entries

Every now and then, I'd take a look at them and try to do a little editing and a little pruning. Avowedly, it's been a long time now. :(

The logic behind my actions has always been that, unless absolutely warranted, a category with only one or two members is as useless as one who has more than a score... I must say that I never minded the open and interactive nature of the process -- until its failure becomes manifest by resilient management issues (e.g., such as now).

The old method (I can drag up a few old posts about this) was for someone to suggest re-categorization of a few different entries or the addition of a new category. By opening it up, it took some of the burden off users to research and structure that process and Andrew to manage them.

I need to emphasize that I don't disagree with your conclusions and I'm really impressed by the work you put into this analysis, it's just that this is something we did intentionally. The thought was that folks like you and me would monitor entries to the categories list and cut out or consolidate. Sadly I think I've neglected this area over the past 3 years.

So here's what I have done.

By default now, only public categories are shown.

There's a checkbox that allows one to display the private categories if desired.

Nice, Thanks !

Perhaps we can reinstate CAD | CAD/CAM as legit private categories, then ?

(Would suit FreeDraft nicely, pending other likely candidates such as SolveSpace ...)

@billon :o

For the purpose of efficiently parsing the Graphics Categories, specific entries such as "CAD/CAM"
(which may include products with 2D or 3D drawing functions, BTW)
seem more appropriate than "3D", for instance, and certainly more so than grab-bag "Miscellaneous".

And this would be a private entry, anyway, so it would not "pollute" the default public Categories display,
but could still be used as a specific search argument to return likely pertinent hits.

Opinions may differ, of course...shall we vote ?
