I'm just updating this thread as it's something I'm crossing my fingers eventually loops back around to something usable for freeware users. There's not a wealth of great desktop search tools out there. Unfortunately at this stage, it doesn't look encouraging ...

---

Softpedia is reporting an update last month, but there's no changelog (https://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/ ... ktop.shtml). The only thing I can tell is that this is now a liteware program with different features available for free vs. paying customers, including Advanced Query Language, Result Export to CSV, Search Engine Memory Management, and Search Index Relocation. Whatever those are.

As to whether or not the system load has been addressed, the requirements listing suggests you're still dealing with a major resource hog:
Minimum
Windows 7
Java 8
.NET 4.5
2 GB RAM

Recommended
Windows 10
Java 8
8 GB RAM
SSD drive
... it's notable that most operating systems run fine on 8 gigs of RAM. Probably won't be re-testing anytime soon.
