Note
I have communicated with one of the Gajim developers- asterix and he has always been friendly and helpful. When the first portable version of Gajim was released on 2017-01-31 (version 0.16.7-1) I promised to post about it here and I am doing it now with great delay.
Thanks to webfork whose post about Gajim in another forum thread reminded me of my duty.
Gajim is cross-platform and can run under Windows, Linux and macOS.
Gajim is one of the few pure Jabber clients still in active development.
Gajim offers lots of customization options.

I got a chance to test this recently and I'm extremely impressed. More to come.

So I was thrown off from testing this program due to the low version number (0.16 sounds like an alpha), but that's simply not the case. This program is amazing.

RAM usage: 40 megs, which is a little less than I expected. MUCH less RAM and CPU than my previous solution.

Highlights:

* Easy to customize notifications (also very important)
* An easy account registration right inside the app for a very long list of available servers
* Ability to make it function as both separate windows AND a single window for everything

I didn't have a chance to test audio/video or file transfer functions.

Wishlist:

* Ability to use a portable version of GPG (the program currently looks for an installed version).

* Some indication of what is an ideal Jabber server (the list is crazy long)

* Some issues with communicating with someone in a chat room vs. just connecting with their Jabber address. I'm not sure what that was about.

I recently tested this by moving it to a new computer and something broke -- I'm not sure what went wrong as the info inside the "userdata" seems intact and this was saved to the same hard link: (c:\temp\gaijim\).

Anyway, before adding to the database, I'd like to check it more thoroughly to make sure I set it up right.

Update: v1.3.1 is out, this program has been seeing ongoing development, and claims to have addressed end-to-end encryption, which was a lasting criticism of the XMPP clients.

Lots of updates out since we last talked about this. Now at v1.4.3 and more emojis.

It can't touch a lot of commercial offerings on features right now but unlike most commercial options, Gajim is open, secure, and seems to respect user privacy.

Changes: https://gajim.org/post/
Download: https://gajim.org/download/ (portable version available)
Documentation: https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/wikis/help/Help

A list of servers you can connect to is on https://xmpp.net website. Anonymous signup doesn't seem to be supported by any of the default servers, which didn't mean much because you can just write in any username to sign up.

Other notes

Good

* Generally looks good, lots of nice preferences.
* Was able to connect over a VPN with no issue.

Meh

* Video calls not currently supported on Windows.
* In terms of a social outlet, chat room selection was almost non-existent.
* Web page and introductory materials could use some help, but you could say the same for my project.
* Using a lots of system resources for a chat program

Resource usage

Download: 108 megs download, 513 uncompressed

RAM: 120 megs
