"Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling – and may even offer a paid-for, no-ad version"

Was digging into this topic in a related thread and came across the non-simple list of steps necessary to disable the various cryptocurrency features. Yikes.

EDIT: Not sure this deserves a separate post, but a full list of Brave browser controversies. There were several issues that went through the news cycle that I missed that gave me pause.

Brave v1.43.88 released 2022-09-02 (changes at https://brave.com/latest/).

The previous post notwithstanding, it's good to be privy with the following info:
Brave for desktop is built on top of the open-source Chromium project. We add features on top of what is already there and we also remove features or pieces of the code. These deviations we make that touch the core Chromium code are done via patching.

Sort of a non-update here ... really not looking like a portable Brave is going to happen.

Just read this...
Forgetful Browsing is the first in a series of upcoming tools Brave has planned to continue protecting Brave users and address first-party re-identification. Starting with [currently unreleased] desktop version 1.53, and Android version 1.54, Brave browsers will include a new feature called Forgetful Browsing, which allows users to always clear cookies and other storage when the site is closed. [...] Forgetful Browsing is similar to, but more powerful and protective than, popular browsing extensions and private browsing modes.

FYI, Brave is currently v1.51.114 released 2023-05-09 (release notes at https://brave.com/latest/).
