Peppermint is an excellent choice. I've been around Windows 8.x & 10 several times now and I have precisely the same feeling: I'd rather use Linux.

Lucky for me, Windows 7 is holding out alright for the time being.

That's unfortunately my feeling as well. This site and a huge amount of my work is Windows-based but I've long known Microsoft could drop the ball and I think we're there. Win10 is smooth and pretty, but is missing the polish of WinXP or Win7, and frankly I don't trust it. I'm already giving a huge amount of personal data to Microsoft via Linkedin, I don't want to give them anymore via the operating system that may or may not communicate important details with someone I don't specifically allow.

Obviously ChromeOS / Android have the same issue and I'm not really a fan of Mac even though I own one so -- like you and Midas -- that really leaves Linux. Time will tell, I guess.

I liked Windows 8 Start Screen Tiles system before so naturally I like Windows 10 since its much better in everything EXCEPT the Start Menu search. It somehow has an inferior to Win8/7 start menu search. I couldn't figure out why it can't find my pinned start menu tiles shortcuts and I tried every fix relating to the search indexing service.

Only recently did I find the reason why...
http://blog.mgiuffrida.com/2017/01/28/w ... -menu.html

And I had these bookmarked forever in hopes somehow someone would find a fix. Lots of people had issues with Start Menu Search.

The "Pin to Start" context menu adding broken start menu tile shorcuts that can't be searched has been around since launch. How microsoft devs haven't gotten around to fixing this blows my mind. Do they even use their own OS? I guess they don't use portable apps and just install everything so its no problem for them.

It's a little annoying that I have to manually add shortcuts into the start menu folder. Not that I really needed this functionality since I have every Start Menu Tile organized and categorized neatly and can just easily find them visually. But at least I now have the option to search my portable app shortcuts without using a third party program.

The next major Windows 10 update (expected in March or April) will have an app that allows the user to see all the data that the OS sends to Microsoft.

People holding on to Windows 7/8 on newer or unsupported hardware might find this piece of software interesting... (untested! Installation required, it seems).
[wufuc] Disables the "Unsupported Hardware" message in Windows Update, and allows you to continue installing updates on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems with Intel Kaby Lake, AMD Ryzen, or other unsupported processors.

Older unsupported processors:
  • Intel Atom Z530
  • Intel Atom D525
  • Intel Core i5-M 560
  • Intel Core i5-4300M
  • Intel Core i7-4930K
  • Intel Pentium B940
  • AMD FX-6300
  • AMD FX-8350
  • AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-34

Excellent news. I'd hate to see Atom and Turion machines abandoned due to that message. Still very good processors.

huhu, that's something for me!
My partner tried to update his Windows 7 to Windows 10, and he ended up with a blue screen (that were one of the first updates)... I'm kinda afraid now of any Microsoft updates.

Not gonna lie I too gloat a little, though mostly when it's from users who'd previously argue incessantly that W10 was the 'best Windows ever'... even despite all the issues that were widespread, which only became more apparent as time continued. I'm sure it runs fine for some but I feel for the rest who've had to put up with the gamut of problems it brings with each update.

Just today heard from someone who'd lost important documents due to corruption from a W10 update (different than the 1809 update recently which also resulted in document deletion for various users). I've read multiple times MS reduced their quality assurance/bug testing team prior to W10 which if so definitely shows.

Problem being we'll all be pretty much forced to W10 once EoL updates end. One would hope they'd have things settle by then but realistically I'm not so sure.

I keep hearing very encouraging things about Microsoft pretty much everywhere. They're friendly to open source, licensing, and there's no shortage of good things in terms of philanthropy. Here I am on the other end of it with a site that's focused on Windows and I spent ~6 hours every day with Office and SharePoint, and neither one is doing well. The same old pointless new features, randomly dumping old features, vendor lock-in, bad collaboration tools, and poor privacy.

A friend of mine finally nailed it when he pointed out that there are really two Microsoft's: the old company that still makes plenty of money and isn't going anywhere and the new company that's making big money off Linux cloud offerings. While there's a lot I don't know about the changing landscape of technology, if things keep going this direction, everything you do with MS is going to be through some web app or Android, and Windows 10 will be used mostly at big companies the way Apple/Adobe are for creatives.

I'm going to add the news about changes in Microsoft Edge browser rendering engine here, as this topic has the highest number of mentions of it...
The software giant is beginning to rebuild Microsoft Edge to run on Chromium, the same open-source web rendering engine that powers Google’s Chrome browser. This means Edge will soon be powered by Blink and the V8 JavaScript engines. [...] So why is Microsoft changing its rendering engine? Why now? Edge has fallen massively behind Chrome in terms of market share, and it’s getting to the point where Chrome is the new IE6.

Some people think this is great news...
It's still early days, and Microsoft's plans aren’t even fully baked yet, but I'm excited that we're shifting into a new gear where web-based technology is treated as a first-party citizen by the operating system vendors.

Apparently, Mozilla not so much...
The CEO of Mozilla, Chris Beard, says it is bad for competition and will help to make Google even more powerful.

Lastly, Ghacks.net reports that Google sure is overbearing regarding software.
Long standing and respected software companies such as Greatis, Antibody Software, Scooter Software, or IBE Software had some of their programs flagged by Google Safe Browsing on December 1, 2018.

Latest Windows 10 Insider builds have a new feature called Windows Sandbox. It's a built-in virtual machine that allows you to run programs sandboxed: once you close the sandbox, all the changes the program made are permanently deleted.

What a weird thing. After all these years they finally include a sandbox? I guess I'll take it as good news after what seemed like a rather long series of bad or shrug-worthy news.
