Intranet Search?

Wanted to poll the group here: at my job we've got an intranet website that for whatever reason has an *insanely* slow search tool. I've been looking for some kind of desktop spider programs that will run through the website and just pull down text data.

This is growing increasingly important so I'm not concerned about license or freeware status, but it's got to accept redirects. Some link checker programs ignore redirects and those seem to just give up on our intranet.

Suggestions?

IMHO, desktop clients of the sort will be few and quirky; OTOH, webscripts abound... Webscrappers will be the way to look, methinks. :)

I know this conversation didn't garner a lot of interest the last time it came up, but I am still fighting on an almost daily basis with a terrible company intranet. I have yet to see one that's very good, but my current employment takes it to a whole new low by basically making numerous tools available and then locking down 80% of them. The effort at a system meta-search is ... amusing.

Does anyone have tools or techniques they use to manage or navigate that? Search or otherwise?

Very good sounds like ZoomSearch engine.
I've tested this and it's an efficient and reliable program.
I'm considering to buy a license sooner or later to remove the trial limitations (50 pages/documents max).
