CamStudio - screen recording

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

CamStudio - screen recording

#1 Post by Macgyverjr »

I just DL this and it works well running of my USB Drive (does not require Admin privileges to install either). I swiped the info below from their webpage http://www.camstudio.org/

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)

You can download and use it completely free - yep - completely 100% free for your personal and commercial projects as CamStudio and the Codec are released under the GPL (for more details on this license, click http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html.)[/url]

Portable CamStudio 2.0

The current CamStudio in the database leaves a slew of registry entries, this one doesn't.

v. 2.7 has been out for a while and I'm pretty happy with it so far, although the included codecs are fairly low compression so I'm using Video2Video on anything shared. Unfortunately, the current instructions don't work on that version. Anyone mind if I switch over to the PA version or want to see if they can tweak the native one?

CamStudio_2.7_r316_setup.exe can be uniextracted but it writes settings to AppData and the registry. It also needs 3 additional files: "mfc100.dll" "msvcp100.dll" and "msvcr100.dll".
I use a Jauntized version and the PAc version. They both work well.
I vote for switching the entry unless there is a hidden code we can add to the "CamStudio.cfg" file.

What "included codecs" are you talking about? I don't think there are any. CamStudioCodec_1.5_Setup.exe has to be installed to work.

I also tested Lagarith Lossless Codec, Huffyuv v2.1.1 and MSU Screen Capture Lossless Codec v1.2. Don't find their results better. :)

I'm confused, the owner isn't the developer? Or am I missing something?

As far as I know, the project has been taken over by someone else a year or two ago. Are you referring to something else?

Whatever comes with the PA version. I didn't make much headway with the installed version.

No codecs come with PAc version. CamStudio uses the system's installed codecs. I think Windows comes with some Microsoft Video 1 codec, but I don't like the recording quality it puts out.

OK, because when I last used CamStudio is was 'owned' by someone who had no knowledge of C++ but was keen for the project to continue. Now there are updates so I'm wondering who exactly is the developer? I'm looking at SourceForge now.

http://camstudio.org/forum/discussion/1 ... its-future
As long time users and forum members will know, I've been running CamStudio.org as pet project for the last 7 years helped by incredible volunteers who were able to donate time and expertise and when I could afford it, paying for developers to fix bugs and add bits and pieces ...
Emphasis added.

I read that before, hence why I'm surprised the owner isn't a developer.

Does anyone have a preference for the WinPenPack vs. PortableApps versions?
