Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Portable Kanban - [DotNET] project management

#1 Post by Dmitry Ivanov »

Portable Kanban - personal task manager, implements kanban concept (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Kanban):
+ Installation is not required.
+ Simple intuitive GUI.
+ Just one app file and one xml file for data.
+ Works in offline mode, no internet connections ever required.

Tested 3.9.5611.40086 on a Win7x64 machine.

It's portable but I couldn't get it to work. The "Add Task" item button didn't function so there wasn't much else to do. Shame too cuz there's not that many local machine Kanban tools out there. I had to fudge an Excel template I found.

Please, read readme.txt before starting to use PK. Create topics, columns and views before adding any task.

Are we using the same program? There's nothing in the readme file about that and I don't see any topics, columns, or views options. I'm using program defaults (download program, launch, local file (leaving create demo data unchecked). Version 3.9.5611.40086.

License: I did find out from the readme file that this is freeware for personal use only.

You're right, it's not in readme. Please, take a look at the presentation: http://dmitryivanov.net/
It's freeware, license is in the 'About' window.
In short words:
- kanban board is empty by default
- you need to define columns, topics, tags and views
- as soon as you defined at least 1 column you can add new tasks.

Portable Kanban - project management

#6 Post by webfork »

One thing that keeps coming up in my career is project management and one of the hardest parts about that process is tracking that in a clear and logical way. I've come up with a few tricks over the years but I almost always come back to Excel and LibreOffice Writer for tracking.

Still, there are very few free tools that advertise portability or offer any kind of collaboration/visibility so I looked into this one.

Short version: not ready for prime time.

Some highlights:

* Claims portability ("no install")
* Includes a pomodoro timer
* Drag & drop any file to app window to create a new task with attached file.

This isn't the easiest program I've ever used for time and activity tracking, but it is free and has a lot of features. Note that you have to go through settings before doing anything else.

Websites:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-too ... nban.shtml

Tested: 4.3.6526.39492

Requires: dotNET 4.6.2

License: MsPL

Wishlist:

* Ability to generate columns inside the interface
* Different license (GPL or Apache)
* Different color palate (pastels, different shades of blue/green/etc.)

Issues:

The program kept complaining that
  • the directory of "C:\Users\username\Desktop\PortableKanban\Files" doesn't exist. If location of files is changed then change settings immediately.
I tried creating a "Files" folder to see what would happen and it just kicked up a new error:
  • An exception occurred during a WebClient request. Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Users\username\Desktop\PortableKanban\Update\PortableKanban.version'.
Status: Portable, writing to the local folder. Ultimately this program feels a little early stage and maybe I'll try to come back to it down the road.
