Unfortunately, I think this sort of thing will keep happening. That's one reason we scan all the apps we release and hash them, comparing the hash to the download on the user's end. That way even if the publisher gets hacked, the PA.c Platform will refuse to run the installer. Fun fact: At least two portable suites/updaters distributed the infected versions of CCleaner in 2017 to users and never informed them.

I think Microsoft made the decision due to the use of dark patterns in the installer, which is beyond just bundleware but not as far as installing without any notice or warning. i still use v5.30 - it never tries to phone home afaict
