HTML Notepad - HTML WYSIWYG editor, cross platform

#1 Post by lintalist »

Website: https://html-notepad.com/
Source: https://github.com/c-smile/sciter-sdk/t ... er/notepad
Notes:
  • Download ZIP file, there are two files in a (peculiar) nested folder structure (for a download) but unpack html-notepad.exe and sciter.dll to a folder and run the exe and it works.
  • Saves settings in \AppData\Roaming\html-notepad.json so not "portable"/stealth (but seems like an easy fix to make it so - posted an issue at GH)
  • The author says its a (early) beta and mentions "PRO" so it may be shareware at some point ?? (just a guess so don't take my word for it)
What HTML-NOTEPAD is

It is a WYSIWYG editor of structured documents: texts that have hierarchical and semantically meaningful (oxymoron, no?) structure: headers, list, plaintext islands, tables and so on.

What HTML-NOTEPAD is not

HTML-NOTEPAD is not a “web page editor”. Don’t even expect to create “cool web pages” with it. With modern CSS, WYSIWYG Web design is simply impossible. Web pages are crafted manually by editing CSS, that is by nature of CSS. But still HTML-NOTEPAD can be useful for Web designers too – for the cases when we need to create textual (yet structural) content of our pages.

The application

HTML-NOTEPAD uses Sciter Engine for its UI. That means it is small, fast, does not have external dependencies and works on all major desktop operating systems: Windows (from XP to 10), Mac OS and Linux

Good suggestion. Also, I absolutely love the animated intro on the home page. That's definitely what program intros should look like.

Resources: 23.4 megs RAM, 5.7 megs disk

Status: Not portable, writes to AppData. Tested v.0.1.1.3

License: Freeware

Forum: https://sciter.com/forums/forum/html-notepad/

Analysis: Some cool ideas here, but I had some issues switching between markdown source and standard markdown (a bunch of "\" characters showed up) and the nested bullets and I couldn't figure out how to get the nested numbers and nested bullets to function the way I could decipher.

HTML Notepad v4.3.0.5 released (changelog at https://html-notepad.com/2019/06/07/4-3-0-5/).

Compatibility with Windows 10.1903

Note: versioning number matches now Sciter version.

Plus, a piece of news that might interest die hard XP users:

Universal version, works on all Windows version starting from Windows XP (coming).

BTW, I didn't test extensively but couldn't find any traces in '%APPDATA%' after running it a couple of times. No documents, no settings? :|

The only thing I could change was the GUI theme...

In the latest version.

In a previous v0.1.0.0...
