What's the easiest way to make an application portable?

If you are currently developing portable freeware or planning to do so, use this forum to discuss technical implementation, seek out like-minded developers for partnership, or solicit interested users for beta testing.

What's the easiest way to make an application portable?

#1 Post by Arithmomaniac »

I know how to find what files/keys are changed, but I don't know NSIS. Which launcher is most newbie-friendly (least coding)?

Thanks,

Thinstall, easily.

If you can't afford it, and don't want to bother with coding, then you can always try JauntePE. It's a bit more complex to use than Thinstall, but there is a lot of information on how to use it in these forums.

easiest way to make an application "portable" is by bugging the programmer to change code himself (this never works (for most part) though :) )

dodgy downloads

Hi, I got the portable builder app down but my virus checker blocked the file regshotrunner.exe, virustotal reports it is nasty so I was wondering if anyone has a clean version?

Portable Builder

#8 Post by SlowLearner »

Hi Banshee

I got the same thing from AVG - until I updated it.

I think AVG made a version that thought many things were viruses, but then they rectified it.

I am currently using Portable Builder 1 - from the site above
http://resurrected.blogsome.com/2007/04 ... thinstall/

the direct link is here
http://rapidshare.com/files/104944225/P ... r_v1.0.zip

I haven't had any problems with this, and unlike thinstall, this is free.

BTW - Have you tried JauntePE on this site?

I hope that helps

OK, two things:

1) It was not just AVG, the file got a positive hit on 13 out of 31 independent virus checks on virustotal, so I don't think it was just my version.

2) Does nothing worry you about the second version (1.0) you posted?!?! In the archive is a directory called "Free Ad-clicker", now call me a bluff old traditionalist but this sounds just a teensy bit dodgy to me. So, delete that folder - I dont want it and guess what, when you run the portable apps builder it fails saying 'Essential files are missing - application will terminate"

And what are these essential files? Well, the error messagebox has the title "Money Making files are missing". Cmon, are you serious???!!!

And the developer has the balls to write "may I thank honesty" in the help file whislt trying to blag donations??!?!

I would steer well clear of this guy and his trojan applications.

Just trying to help

Hi Ban

I guess I haven't looked into it as much as you - I downloaded it and used it a few times. Thanks for the info.

Again - my advice would be to use JauntePE. This is excellent and the guy who wrote it is very helpfull and very honest.

Thanks

True, but then we have to find a current version of JauntPE with a working link....

Good luck with that. Let me know if you can get a current copy.

Why don't you try this one.
http://portableapps.com/node/9909
Download:
http://rapidshare.com/files/100560719/P ... 4_beta.zip

Well, the download is from Rapidshare so you need to be a bit of a risk taker.

As far as I could check it is clean, but jotti and virustotal are too busy at the moment, so no check from those two sites.

I haven't tried the software so far, only Portable Builder until I found this thread here. :(
If you do try it, please let me know how it worked. I would like to know if it is worth a try or if there is anyhing suspicious in there too. :D

Greetings

Geddich

P.S. Finally I could check the package with jotti - only two warnings (21 scanners). It really seems to be OK.

P.P.S. Similar result from VirusTotal. 5 warnings from 31 scanners. One of those was a "archive damaged" warning.

Thinstall is not going out of business anytime soon. The post is almost 2 years old and this was likely before VMWare acquired Thinstall.
However, there are problems with people using Thinstall w/out knowing how it works, it's not easy as it seems. Thinstalled programs may not be portable, may not work, may work incorrectly.
The funniest example I recall is a file manager. Whenever you tried to copy a file (I guess this applied to most file operations, but the poster didn't clarify it), the output was in the sandbox. Great app that does nothing but wastes space and time.
But the best is that the file manager was portable by itself. Just install on the pendrive and go.

I can say only: people, understand problems with portability before rushing to fix them with Thinstall (JPE too!).
Making a portable app by writing own launcher is a good way. As long as it's not a solution that's ready with 3 clicks.

Build your own portables

#15 Post by handsomejoe.boy »

No this has nothing to do with thinstall it is just on a discussion page about thinstall.
try it, it scans before and after, then creates a portable version

it has worked with lots of apps so far for me - the easiiest FREE software I have found
