SoftPerfect programs go commercial

#1 Post by smaragdus »

[Moderator note: this thread was split from the Softperfect Network Scanner thread.]

---

SoftPerfect Network Scanner is now commercial software, it costs US $29, changes in version 7.0 from 2016-11-10 (full change log):
  • The Network Scanner is now commercial software. To facilitate its further development, we introduced a licence fee.
  • Added viewing and saving discarded lines to a file during IP address import.
  • Added automatic caching of successful logins to speed-up scanning.
  • Added preview and customisable filters for Active Directory import.
Licence
Commercial
Maximum 10 devices displayed in demo
The last free version of SoftPerfect Network Scanner is 6.2.1. A couple of days ago the same happened to SoftPerfect RAM Disk. Perhaps NetWorx will have the same fate.

Yes, mirror for the last free version would be nice.

Recommend instead old faithful (never mind even more popular) Angry IP Scanner v2.21, perhaps ?...;-)

Good catch. Addeing notes to entries.

The license appears to allow redistribution so we should be able to either point to or host the last available freeware version.

Update: Softperfect Network Scanner

Steps:
  1. Download the installer listed above and use Bioruebe's Universal Extract program
  2. Launch netscan.exe
  3. Move netscan.xml from USER\AppData\Roaming\SoftPerfect Network Scanner to the application folder
  4. Launch netscan.exe /xml
  5. When prompted, decline to check for new versions
Optionally, delete other files

For the 64-bit version:
  • Follow the steps above but use netscan,2.exe in the Additional Files folder and rename it to netscan.exe
Could someone verify this?

Tried the installer version of netscan. It's not portable.

Here's netscan_portable.zip v6.2.1.

I like ImDiskTk for ramdisk software. It has dynamic memory management and updated frequently. Another is OSFMount which can be portable https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2056

I thought the system up above fixed that. Where was it writing settings?

Anyway, better to have the actual portable versions. Bravo.

It was still being saved in AppData. The hash of installer extracted netscan.exe is different from the actual portable one. So its clearly compiled differently to be portable.

I expected this:
Licence
Freeware until 31 December 2016
Commercial from 1 January 2017
Greed is appalling.

The last version I have on my machine is 5.2, which is fairly old. Does anyone else have a mirror of the last freeware version?
smaragdus wrote:Greed is appalling.
I wouldn't just put it down to mere greed. I'm okay with developers making money, but it is sad to see that they couldn't do (for example) a free and pro version or any of a number of other tacks beyond purely commercial.

@webfork:

If i get everything right, it's still freeware
You can continue using the current free version as long as you like, however all NetWorx files downloaded after 31 December 2016 will require a licence key to work beyond the free trial period.
So if we still planning listing NetWorx, somebody must download latest version on December 31 and make mirror.

BTW, latest version is 5.5.5.16343 from December 8

It's admittedly a little confusing how that's going to play out. I wonder if the multiple versions back phone home for a license check. Anyway, I downloaded a copy of the current version so I guess we'll see.
