PIM v2.90

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

I was very interested in this one based on its description but Download.com gave it a very tepid review:

PIM Archiver
http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=941

Review
http://download.cnet.com/PIM-Archiver/3 ... 73641.html

To avoid confusion with personal information managers, I'm going to rename it similarly.

@moderators

Please merge this thread with that one- http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... f=4&t=1816.

I did a superficial test compressing a folder (about 17 MB) containing JPEG files and I got the following results:

-1. KZ- 14.289 KB
-2. PIM- 17.285 KB
-3. 7Z- 17.361 KB
-4. RAR- 17.373 KB
-5. ZIP- 17.378 KB
-6. ARC- 17.424 KB

My test is arbitrary and proves nothing except the fact that the proprietary KuaiZip KZ is unbeatable in terms of compression of JPEG files. I didn't measure the exact compression times but it was evident that PIM was the slowest.

..

Update

I made two more tests.

In the first one I compressed a folder (about 4 MB) containing mixed text files (DOC, HTML, MHT, RTF, TXT) and I got the following results:

-1. ARC- 403 KB
-2. 7Z- 411 KB
-3. PIM- 437 KB
-4. KZ- 541 KB
-5. RAR- 565 KB
-6. ZIP- 600 KB

In the second one I compressed a folder (about 124 MB) containing already compressed executable files and I got the following results:

-1. 7Z- 110.336 KB
-2. ARC- 111.904 KB
-3. KZ- 123.228 KB
-4. PIM- 123.650 KB
-5. RAR- 124.725 KB
-6. ZIP- 127.072 KB

It is a pity that PIM has been abandoned since it shows some promise.

PIM is by the same developer of CHK Checksum Utility (http://encode.narod.ru/). He has other data compression software listed on his Website; BCM might be worth checking out.

Donald posted a note to the entry about the program home page / download being offline. I can confirm this but I wasn't able to find a suitable mirror (couldn't find anything on sac.sk). A note has been added to the entry.
